Riverside Plastic Surgeon Highlights Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

Dr. Christopher Chung Explains Results Patients Can Expect From Breast Reduction Surgery

CORONA, CA--(Marketwired - Feb 6, 2014) - Breast reduction surgery can be one of the most fulfilling procedures for women who have breasts that are too large for their body frame, says Dr. Christopher Chung, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Corona. The procedure can provide cosmetic, emotional, and physical health benefits to patients. Dr. Chung notes many of his patients often experience not only satisfactory results, but also a generally fast recovery time. He says women who suffer from back, shoulder, and/or neck pain from heavy breasts, or those feeling self-conscious because of overly large breasts, may benefit from a breast reduction.

The breast reduction procedure removes tissue, excess fat, and skin to reduce the volume of the breasts, while also lifting and contouring the remaining tissue into a more aesthetically pleasing breast shape. Many women with overly large breasts have naturally downward facing areolas, and breast reduction can correct that by repositioning and raising the areola, as well as reducing its size. Breast reduction surgery can create a more balanced, proportional breast size overall, says Dr. Chung.

In addition to alleviating pain and creating a more proportionate breast shape and size, breast reduction surgery can also:

  • Create more symmetry in the breasts if one breast is larger than the other
  • Lessen skin irritation and rashes on the skin beneath the breast
  • Minimize discomfort when participating in physical activity and exercise
  • Help patients fit better into clothing
  • Correct posture
  • Increase self-confidence

There are also different surgical options to create distinct results. Dr. Chung says what's known as "lollipop incision" encircles the areola then makes its way down in a straight line, creating a lollipop shape. The anchor incision adds a horizontal incision beneath the breast, and it is the most common technique, says Dr. Chung. He notes that the lollipop incision generally has less scarring, but it can make it more difficult to raise the nipple position and remove excess skin. Dr. Chung says the anchor incision allows a greater volume reduction for patients with overly large breasts, as well as increased efficacy in recontouring the breasts.

Dr. Chung elaborates on the procedure for breast reduction surgery, the different surgical technique options, expectations, and recovery in a recent blog post titled: "Considering Breast Reduction Surgery? Dr. Christopher Chung Answers Common Questions on the Procedure." He says it's very important that patients thinking about breast reduction seek guidance from a reputable, board-certified plastic surgeon and schedule a consultation to learn more about the procedure.
