ROBERT FUGERE WINS 2005 CANADIAN MEN'S SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Attention: Sports Editor, Travel/Tourism Editor BELOEIL--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 22, 2005) - Robert Fugere of Gatineau, Que. shot a scorching final-round 67 for a tournament-total 219 to come from behind at Beloeil Golf Club and win the 2005 Canadian Men's Senior Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA).

The 65-year old Fugere shot 76-76 in the first two rounds and headed into final-round action tied for 20th. He knew that he would have to play well if he wanted to surpass the leaders and take home the John Rankin Memorial Trophy.

"I knew I could play well I just had to do it…especially after a bad round yesterday," said Fugere who previously won the 1999 Canadian Senior Match Play Championship. "I'm very very happy to win this especially in my home province, the last time I won was in Toronto so it feels great to win a Canadian Championship at home."

Also coming from behind were John Thrasher of Sarnia, Ont. who finished with a tournament-total 220 and John French of Bloomfield Hills, MI who shot 221. Both started the day tied for 10th and finished second and third respectively. Second-round leader Brian Jeffery of Collingwood, Ont. shot a final-round 78 to finish tied for fourth at nine-over-par with Vaughan Peckham of London, Ont.

Two-time Canadian Senior champion and seven-time Canadian Mid-Amateur champion Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que. shot a final-round 70 for a tournament-total 223 to finish tied for sixth.

In the 70 and over Super Senior division, Patrick Suraj of Etobicoke, Ont. shot a final-round 78 for a tournament-total 232 to lead wire-to-wire and take home the Governors Cup.

"I feel that it is time I take my hat off…but I will continue playing," said the 70-year old two-time Canadian Men's Senior Champion. "The round went well until the ninth hole otherwise I would have been many shots ahead. The course played tough…every day was different".

Finishing three-strokes back was Chuck Ribelin of Dallas, TX at 235 while fellow American Carey Schulten of Dallas, TX was tied for third with Lindsay Kipps of Surrey, B.C. at 236.

The 2006 Canadian Men's Senior Championship will be held at Glendale Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
