Rochester Chiropractor Treats and Advises Patients Suffering From Psoriasis

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI--(Marketwire - Dec 8, 2011) - Dr. Ron Fried, a Rochester chiropractor who has operated the Dr. Ron Fried Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Rochester Hills for the past 22 years, treats patients who suffer from Psoriasis, an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack its own skin cells. People who suffer from Psoriasis often experience painful, itchy red and silvery scaly patches or "plaques" of skin around the knees and elbows. The plaques can appear in places all over the body, however, including the scalp, hands, feet and torso. Because the dry, cold air of winter often exacerbates the discomfort of Psoriasis outbreaks, Dr. Fried recently released a YouTube video providing advice to patients on how to alleviate the discomfort.

Dr. Fried says that although Psoriasis is an incurable condition that often runs in families, there are several things patients can do to make themselves more comfortable, some of which he covers in his YouTube Psoriasis video message.

"One thing that really helps my Psoriasis patients is making sure their home environment stays as warm and humidified as possible during the winter. The cold dry air can make their plaques itchier and more painful, so keeping the air comfortable, usually with the aid of humidifiers, can really help," said Dr. Fried.

He also recommends that his Rochester and Rochester Hills chiropractic patients keep their skin hydrated by using moisturizing creams containing vitamins A, D, and E or lanolin.

Dr. Fried also recommends Phototherapy, or light therapy for patients with the most common form of Psoriasis, called Psoriasis vulgaris or "Plaque Psoriasis," which affects nearly 90 percent of sufferers. According to Dr. Fried, UVB ultraviolet light can slow the growth of skin cells. In a person with psoriasis, skin cells multiply up to ten times faster than normal skin cells, so slowing the rate of growth closer to normal can be helpful.

He also urges caution with UVB therapy, however, saying that people who increase their sun exposure should wear a proper sunscreen, and that people who opt for using a tanning salon should talk with him about the correct amount of time and frequency so that they do not over-do the treatment.

Chiropractor Dr. Fried says that although many of his current Psoriasis patients first came to his Rochester Hills chiropractic clinic seeking massage therapy, or help for back pain, neck pain, headaches, and various injuries, they soon learned that chiropractic care could help alleviate their Psoriasis symptoms as well.

According to Dr. Fried, "Of course, Psoriasis is not something we have a cure for, but we can certainly do a lot to help people so their symptoms are more manageable and less painful. Even spinal adjustments seem to help because they enable the nervous system to function better, which can help minimize the damage and frequency of the outbreaks. And of course, we counsel our patients never, never to pick at their plaques."
