Rochester Dentists Return From Dental Mission Trip

ROCHESTER, MN--(Marketwired - March 25, 2016) - Staff members of Northwest Dental Group, a Rochester family dental practice, recently completed a weeklong dental mission trip in one of Costa Rica's poorest areas.

This month, Drs. Katie Post and Rob Vander Broek traveled to the La Carpio neighborhood in San José -- the country's capital -- joined by dental hygienists Mandy Cummings and Kacey Johnson and dental assistants Lindsay Johnson and Kelly Schmidt. La Carpio is one the country's poorest neighborhoods -- and one where regular citizens do not have access to dental care.

"Our team came together, in some of the worst conditions I've ever seen, to open their hearts and use their talents to make a difference," said Dr. Post of Northwest Dental Group. "Some of the people we treated had been battling dental problems for quite some time and just hadn't had access to regular dental care."

Dr. Post and her dental team worked with patients struggling with a variety of dental issues and helped educate patients about great at-home dental care techniques. The team also worked at a local soup kitchen to feed more than 100 children.

Costa Rica has a national poverty rate of about 24 percent, and many of those citizens go without proper dental care. In the San José neighborhood of La Carpio, many residents live in houses constructed from wooden crates and corrugated tin. About 35,000 people live in the small community, and in addition to high poverty rates, the area also has high unemployment and high crime rates.

"From this experience, I want to do more in Rochester," Dr. Post said. "We have a need, and I want to help improve their lives."

Northwest Dental Group provides comprehensive services in general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, tooth extractions, Invisalign, sleep apnea treatment, sports dentistry, root canals and dental implants. The talented staff at Northwest Dental Group can replace missing teeth with dental implants or use implants to provide stability to dentures.

Northwest Dental Group is a unique Rochester dental practice as it offers several forms of sedation. The practice uses sedation techniques like oral conscious sedation and IV sedation for fearful patients or for patients who need extensive dental work.

Northwest Dental Group is active in the community and supports Mission of Mercy and The Salvation Army Good Samaritan Health Clinic and hosts Dentistry From The Heart. The Salvation Army Good Samaritan Health Clinic, located in Rochester, provides medical and dental care to patients regardless of insurance status.

Dr. Post earned her dental degree from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and completed a residency at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Post is a member of the the Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Association, Zumbro Valley Dental Society and Minnesota Dental Association.

Dr. Steven Sperling holds an undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield and earned his dental degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He holds a Mastership from the Academy of General Dentistry and Fellowship with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Dr. Sperling has completed thousands of hours in continuing education, including live training and in-office training. Dr. Sperling is also a governor-appointed member of the Minnesota Board of Dentistry and is the co-author of an Amazon best-selling book, "Change Agents."
