Roger's House Counting on the Community and Sens Foundation

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 4, 2011) - The 2011 Roger's House Telethon presented by CN officially kicked off this morning when Sens Foundation president Danielle Robinson received a $4,300 donation from Kate Reeve, the 12-year-old founder of Fashions for Funds. In addition, Robinson announced plans for the annual telethon.

"The support we receive from people like Kate is truly inspiring," said Sens Foundation president Danielle Robinson. "Meeting the additonal requirerments to Roger's House will be a challenge for both our organization and ultimately for the community but I'm confident it's a challenge we can overcome together."

The Sens Foundation original support of Roger's House included monies to cover 10 per cent of its annual operating costs. As a result of rising patient needs and new and innovative programs, the foundation's commitment now stands at $1 million, which is 30 per cent of the facility's operating costs. The Roger's House Telethon is one of the fundraising events that helps meet these needs.

"We have seen acuity rates increase year after year since we opened the doors in 2006. We count on the Sens Foundation for 30 percent of our operating funds as we would have had to turn families away and cut some of our programs if we couldn't obtain the additional funding," said Lloyd Cowin, executive director of Roger's House.

The Sens Foundation will present its annual Roger's House Telethon to help raise the additional funds required to meet this commitment. Presented by CN, the telethon will be broadcast on Rogers Sportsnet on Tuesday, March 15, when the Ottawa Senators host the Pittsburgh Penguins. The telethon will air live beginning at 6:30 p.m. and will be hosted by Ian Mendes (Rogers Sportsnet) and Leanne Cusack (CTV Ottawa).

In 2003, the Sens Foundation launched the Roger's House Telethon to raise funds for the construction of the pediatric palliative care facility. In 2006, Roger's House officially opened and has since provided more than 8,000 days of care and support for the children and families of eastern Ontario and western Quebec.

Roger's House provides a comprehensive pediatric respite and palliative care program with elements of pain and symptom management and grief and bereavement counselling. Since opening its doors, children and youth come to Roger's House for support, to be assessed by the specialized team of medical professionals as well as for respite and end of life care. Immediate family can stay to receive support and education in relation to their child's progressive illness. The ultimate goal of a patient's stay is to foster quality family life.
