Rogers Rolls Out Widespread Deployment of HSDPA Mobile Broadband Service

3G Americas Applauds Announcement

BELLEVUE, WA--(Marketwire - October 17, 2007) - 3G Americas, a wireless trade organization representing the GSM family of technologies, congratulates Rogers Wireless on their widespread deployment of commercial HSDPA service, or High Speed Downlink Packet Access, one of the most advanced mobile broadband wireless technologies available today. It was less than one year ago that Rogers launched HSDPA in three major Canadian markets along with plans to expand to the top Canadian markets during 2007. Now, their HSDPA network service is available in 25 major metropolitan markets from Quebec City to Victoria with coverage commercially available to 60% of the Canadian population. Rogers has the fastest wireless network in Canada and is the only wireless carrier in North America to offer wireless video calling.

Chris Pearson, President of 3G Americas, observed, "The widespread commercial deployment of HSDPA by Rogers demonstrates their technology leadership role in the Americas region." He continued, "3G Americas looks forward to more announcements of commercial HSDPA services in the Americas and around the world in the near future, as operators enhance their networks for increased data throughput speeds to deliver video and other advanced multimedia services to their customers."

Based on the number of customers and deployments worldwide, UMTS/HSDPA is the leading 3G wireless technology. Wireless customers the world over are already utilizing high-speed UMTS/HSDPA wireless data networks and devices for web browsing, email, mobile payments, interactive gaming, video and other services. HSDPA is an enhancement to UMTS and offers a successful combination of spectral efficiency (4-5 times that of UMTS) and high speed data throughput, thus enabling mass market mobile broadband.

To date, there are 181 commercial UMTS networks in service worldwide, serving more than 150 million subscribers, with nearly 200 million subscribers predicted by the end of this year based on estimates from Informa Telecoms & Media. The HSDPA enhancement to UMTS is commercially available to customers on 135 of those networks.

UMTS/HSDPA operators and customers today benefit from the scope and scale of an estimated 2.6 billion GSM subscriptions in more than 220 countries. All UMTS/HSDPA devices are backwards-compatible for global roaming to GSM/GPRS and EDGE. There are more than 250 operators committed to deploying UMTS, and nearly all are expected to enhance their services with HSDPA.
