Ronald McDonald Helps Celebrate Healing Power of Music at ErinoakKids

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 12, 2008) - Ronald McDonald is about to pop up in Mississauga - this time smack-dab in the middle of Ontario's largest Children's Treatment Centre, to help bring the healing power of music to kids with disabilities.

On November 17, the much-loved symbol and mascot of McDonalds' philanthropy, along with his friends from Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) of Canada, will be at ErinoakKids for the grand opening of the new Ronald McDonald House Charities Music Therapy Room. Said a beaming Bridget Fewtrell, President and CEO of ErinoakKids: "Thanks to their kind donation, we now have a new therapy room for this powerful therapeutic treatment. It's wonderful news for some of the most needful children we treat."

ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development is one of 20 accredited CTCs in Ontario. The non-profit organization annually cares for more than 9,000 children and helps their families as they cope with challenges such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, traumatic injury and strokes. "The power of music therapy for these kids cannot be overstated," said William Murray, Music Therapist at ErinoakKids. "Music is a way to reach out to them, and it can give them the means to reach out to those around them. But it requires skill, and art and technology to do it properly."

And money. Music therapy has long been used to help kids at ErinoakKids, but now, thanks to a $30,000 Helping Hands grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities, the ErinoakKids music therapy program is enhanced with a beautifully equipped therapy room at its original site. The grand opening will take place at 7:00 p.m. November 17th at ErinoakKids, 2277 South Millway in Mississauga, where guests and media can find out more about what music therapy is all about and what it does for kids who have a deep and too-often unmet need to reach out and communicate their feelings.

The event features demonstrations and performances by several ErinoakKids music therapy groups, including the organization's remarkable in-house rock band, Superfire. Parents of client children will be on hand to talk about the huge difference music therapy makes to their kids, and dedicated volunteers will be there to talk about what it means in their lives to help with the music therapy program.

"This will not be your average ribbon cutting," added William Murray, with a grin almost as wide as Ronald McDonald's. "Our kids are going to rock this place. Just you watch them."

McDonald's Canada has a strong reputation for supporting causes for kids. Since January 2004, McDonald's® Restaurants of Canada Limited has donated 10 cents from the sale of every Happy Meal® purchased across Canada, every day of the year. To date, over $20 million has been raised for RMHC through the 10 Cent Happy Meal program.

The success of ErinoakKids' application to Ronald McDonald House Charities comes at a critical time in the evolution of ErinoakKids, which is preparing to launch a Foundation of its own, to support an all-out drive to gather corporate and private donations to build a much-need new treatment facility to serve its growing list of clients in Peel, Halton, Dufferin and, for some programs, Wellington and Waterloo.

"We're delighted and honoured that one of Canada's most-recognized and best-loved foundations funding children's causes is willing to step up to help our kids," said Fewtrell. "They could not have made a better decision," she added.

"Music, for these children, is magic."

The ErinoakKids rock band, Superfire, featuring both ErinoakKids clients and volunteers, will perform at the opening of the Ronald McDonald House Charities Music Therapy Room in Mississauga. A photo is available at the following web link:
