Rossi Calls for Freeze & Fix of City Finances

Mayoral Candidate Will Freeze City Spending, Reduce Council and Create Board of Control

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 8, 2010) - Fresh off announcing his plan to restore accountability to City Hall through recall rights, term limits and online voting, Mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi called for a "freeze and fix" of Toronto's finances and said he change the make up of council to ensure greater accountability.

"As your Mayor I will implement a sweeping and comprehensive freeze of discretionary spending for my first year in office," said Rossi.

Under the freeze and fix plan, all discretionary spending will be frozen during Rossi's first year in office.

Rossi argued that the freeze was required to allow for time to end the unaccountable and wasteful spending at City Hall.

"I understand that every day we continue to waste taxpayer dollars is one day too many," said Rossi.

Rossi also called for a comprehensive, third-party and independent audit of all spending to fix City finances.

Contrasting his plan with opponent George Smitherman's, Rossi said that we cannot trust career politicians to hold themselves fiscally accountable.

"We cannot afford four more years of politicians making decisions without accountability" he said, offering Mr. Smitherman's announcement earlier this week as an example of why this was the case. "Mr. Smitherman told us that we could have our cake and eat it too. It may not be politically popular to say so, but freezing property taxes is irresponsible.

In addition to last week's plan to take back City Hall, Rossi announced changes to make city council more accountable.

Council would be cut to 22 members to accord with federal and provincial boundaries along with a board of control of four councillors elected at large representing Scarborough, Etobicoke /York, Toronto and East York, and North York.

These four members in addition to the mayor would serve as the board of control and executive committee of the City of Toronto.

"We need a Mayor who will make the tough decisions rather than the easy promises." Said Rossi.
