Rossi: Endless Bloor Street Construction Embarrassing Toronto

TIFF Opening Means Whole World is Watching City Hall's Bloor Street Construction Fiasco

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 10, 2010) - Rocco Rossi took to Bloor Street and the heart of the Toronto International Film Festival today to decry the endless, open-pit-mine-style construction which has become a major embarrassment for Toronto with the world watching during TIFF.

"At the very moment TIFF focuses the eyes of the world on Toronto, this is what the world sees: endless construction and gridlock," said Rossi.

Rossi pledged that there would not be another Bloor Street construction fiasco under his watch.

"No more construction sites sitting idle. No more stop and start projects. No more cost overruns," said Rossi. "There will be consequences if we miss the mark."

Rossi's proposal to restore accountability to the planning and construction process includes:

  • Establishing a construction czar to ensure that all city departments and contractors are reading from the same script.
  • Making the protection of ground-level commercial property a key principle of the planning process.
  • Setting clear public benchmarks for project completion and improving delivery times of construction projects.

Rossi contrasted his plan with his opponents, saying that "Rob Ford did not prevent this mess as a Councillor. He didn't ask the hard questions about scheduling, timing and co-ordination. What makes anyone think he will be more effective as mayor?

"George Smitherman is running to be budget chief," he continued. "Will he extract himself from his line by line review to notice the construction messes around town? He did nothing as an MPP for this area to fix this mess."

"Toronto is a global city," concluded Rossi. "We need to be ready for our close-ups -- whether it's TIFF, the Pan Am games or just getting your kid to a soccer game on time."
