Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Makes Decision to Cancel Poultry and Exotic Bird Show

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 26, 2005) - The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair made the decision today to cancel the Poultry and Exotic Bird Show, at the upcoming Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, November 4th - 13th at Exhibition Place in Toronto.

Although it has been determined that there is minimal risk of exposure to avian flu during the Royal Agricultural Poultry and Exotic Bird Show, organizers and industry partners have decided collaboratively, following consultation with health officials, agricultural and veterinary industry experts, to cancel the Poultry and Exotic Bird Show.

Given the importance of the public concern over Avian Flu, The Royal, in collaboration with the Poultry Industry Council and the Chicken Farmers of Ontario will be creating an educational centre, which will clearly and accurately demonstrate the intense regulated environment governing our poultry industry. Industry and health care experts will participate in this program.

Bill Duron, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal explains, "Although we are confident the risk is minimal, we determined that the responsible thing to do for our local, national and international visitor population is to cancel our Poultry and Exotic Bird Show this year. The industry support in this decision and their commitment to participate in what will be an exciting and important education centre has been tremendous."

The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair has registered over 1,000 agriculture exhibitors and over 6,000 individual competitor entries. The cancellation of the Poultry and Exotic Bird Show regrettably will impact approximately 50 exhibitors and over 1,000 birds.

The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is a unique event that brings together an
array of competitors, exhibitors, animals and visitors from Canada and around the world. It showcases Canada's finest equine and agricultural products. It has four focuses: competition; education; entertainment and commerce.
