The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #26 (Kelowna) Receives Federal Support for Commemorative Event

KELOWNA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 13, 2008) - On behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Mr. Ron Cannan, Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country is pleased to announce that a contribution of up to $4,000 is being made to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #26 (Kelowna).

Provided through the Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, the funds are being used to support a commemorative event at the Parkinson Recreation Centre in Kelowna on Saturday, June 14. Legion volunteers and cadets will staff the event for the over 400 veterans and guests who will be attendance.

"This type of event is a great opportunity for Veterans to meet and to share their stories," said Minister Thompson. "It is important to encourage Canadians to continue to honour the legacy of our Veterans."

"The Royal Canadian Legion makes great efforts to give thanks to our Veterans," said Mr. Cannan. By holding this commemorative ceremony, our community has the opportunity to honour the great men and women who have done and are doing so much for our country. Nothing unites us more than our veterans" he said.

Event Coordinator, Art Brown said, "Veterans are becoming more and more scarce as the years progress and events of this nature allow veterans to gather and share past experiences and escapades. Thank you to Veteran Affairs Canada for their continued supported," Mr. Brown added.

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada's Canada Remembers program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
