Royal Wedding Celebrations Divide the Nation

CARDIFF, WALES--(Marketwire - April 27, 2011) - In a survey launched by retail and consumer finance company, Buy As You View, results showed that across the UK over half of us will be celebrating the Royal Wedding this Friday with either a street party, a family get-together or simply watching the events unfold on television.

As a nation, however, 40% of respondents showed no interest in the Royal Wedding at all and have chosen not to mark the occasion. People in Scotland showed the least interest in the nuptials with over 54% of people choosing to do something else on Friday 29th April. The Midlands is the most pro-Royal Wedding region with 76% deciding to watch the wedding, get together with family or attend a party.

People in Wales will be holding the biggest gatherings to celebrate the Royal Wedding with 43% of respondents reporting that their parties will include 50 or more guests. According to the Local Government Association, 156 street closure applications have been submitted and approved throughout Wales, with thousands more people expected to attend parties in gardens, pubs and parks.

Of those who will be attending celebrations, many people, 40% in fact, just view the wedding as a good excuse to have a party. Almost a quarter of respondents feel a sense of patriotism about the event while a quarter are just pleased to have an extra day off work. The North East is the most family orientated region with 11% seeing the Royal Wedding as an ideal opportunity to spend time with their loved ones.

Rachel Morris, Communications Manager at Buy As You View comments:

"There has been a huge amount of hype around the Royal Wedding so we wanted to ask our customers what their plans were for William and Kate's big day. For many people this will be the first Royal Wedding that they will remember and we wanted to take a snapshot of how people will be observing this momentous occasion."

Buy As You View operate in six key regions throughout the UK; Wales, Scotland, the North East, Midlands, Yorkshire and the North West.
