RTBF chooses Thomson's High-Definition cameras

Boulogne -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 23, 2005 -- Major Order Takes Total of HD-Ready Cameras in Belgium Alone To Over 160

Paris/Nevada City, Calif., November 23, 2005 - Radio et Télévision Belges Francophones (RTBF), the French language state broadcaster in Belgium, has placed an order for 42 Grass Valley LDK 6000 high definition cameras. The cameras will be used in studios in three cities and in two new OB units, playing a key role in RTBF's shift to HD. RTBF's order follows that from VTM, the Flemish language broadcaster in Belgium, which is migrating to HD using the LDK 6000 camera.

The first batch of Grass Valley cameras was put into service at the end of the summer and included eight cameras for studios in Brussels and 12 for a new OB vehicle. The first major project for the cameras was the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Francochamps, Belgium in September. RTBF's cameras were used in conjunction with outside broadcast units from Alfacam, which also exclusively uses the LDK 6000.

September saw a further eight cameras delivered to the RTBF studio in Charleroi, and six more for a second OB unit. The remaining eight cameras will be installed in a new studio in Liege in 2006. One of the prime reasons for choosing the LDK 6000 camera for RTBF was that it produces excellent standard definition pictures and is immediately ready for HD, at either 1080/50i or 720/50p.

"This contract for 42 LDK 6000s is the largest single order for HD cameras we have yet received in Europe," said Marc Valentin, president of the Grass Valley business within Thomson. "Should anyone need further proof that HD is poised for take-off in Europe - and that Grass Valley is leading the revolution - then just look at Belgium where at the last count we have no fewer than 176 HD or HD-ready cameras in use, with RTBF and VTM, outside broadcast specialists Alfacam and Videohouse, and the European Union institutions."

The Grass Valley LDK 6000 mk II WorldCam camera delivers native 1080i, 1080p and 720p high definition from its three 9.2 million pixel HD-DPM+ CCDs. 22 bit internal video processing delivers excellent standard definition pictures in parallel to the HD output, allowing the LDK 6000 to fit seamlessly into SD, HD or parallel production workflows.
