New RTI Connext Delivers Integration Power for Interoperable Open Architecture in the Tactical Internet

Leading Defense procurement agencies, such as the US DoD and UK MOD, are already leveraging RTI's capabilities and Databus technology in leading interoperable open architecture (IOA) procurement programs; specific use cases include the DoD UCS (UAS Control Segment) program and MOD Def Stan 23-09 GVA (Generic Vehicle Architecture). Defining systems though their data is a core enabling principle for inherent IOA systems; these programs are leading examples of this approach. RTI's Connext family lets mission-critical systems share and manage data through the Tactical Internet. Thus, systems such as GCS's (Ground Control Stations) and armored vehicles can connect real-time systems and interface them with the enterprise-based command infrastructure.

Tactical Internet integration increases effectiveness and cuts costs. For instance, integrated systems can capture and analyze accurate usage statistics from operational systems and communicate them to command systems. Command can then use this information to improve equipment and battlefield support, combat asset management and deployment and contracting arrangements for equipment support. The entire enterprise, from high-level command to tactical equipment, gains efficiency and effectiveness.

Connext also improves acquisition purchasing models. For instance, with better interoperability, systems integrators can meet the requirement of Dr. Ashton Carter's (former US Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics) 'Better Buying Power: Guidance for Obtaining Greater Efficiency and Productivity in Defense Spending.' Among other objectives, this guidance calls for open-market competition at the subsystems level, enabled by open system architectures. Enabling inherent interoperability massively improves productivity in the single highest cost area -- systems integration. Systems that are interoperable by design reduce integration to a mostly debugging, validation and test exercise. Validation exercises by the UCS program in 2011 showed that integration of applications and sub-systems, even into a competitor's system, took an aggregate 77 hours according to Douglas Gregory, chairman, UCS working group.
