Running Room to Open in Fredericton August 17th: City Will Get Atlantic Canada's 1st Walking Room

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 11, 2005) - Atlantic Canada's first Running Room/Walking Room combination store will open in Fredericton, New Brunswick on Wednesday August 17, 2005 at Unit 26 - 440 King Street in King's Place.

Running Room founder John Stanton will be in Fredericton for the opening and will lead a fun/run walk to raise funds and awareness for Fredericton's world-class trail system. Stanton was recognized last year by MacLean's Magazine as one of 10 individuals who made a difference in the lives of Canadians, citing his contribution to health by promoting greater fitness.

Derrick MacLeod has been named manager of the Fredericton store. MacLeod is best known as one of New Brunswick's premiere speed skating coaches. A member of Speed Skate New Brunswick for more than 25 years, his 20 years of skating was highlighted by a bronze medal performance at the North American Championships in 1990. A coach since 1986, he is the 2002 Recipient of a Petro-Canada National Sports Scholarship for achievement in coaching. In 2003, he and his family earned the Gagne Family Award for exceptional volunteerism to the sport from Speed Skate Canada - only the fifth time the award has been given in the last 30 years. Named New Brunswick Canada Games Long Track Coach in 2003, MacLeod's years of contribution have helped grow competitive speed skating in Fredericton to an unprecedented level. The city currently boasts close to 90 competitive skaters with eighteen making the trip to the 2005 Canadian Nationals. MacLeod's other passion is running for fun. He looks forward to bringing his skills as a coach and motivator to the Running Room, helping beginners, walkers and runners to enjoy the sport to its fullest.

Running Room president John Stanton said, "Opening the Running Room/Walking Room combination stores expands upon our goal to be as inclusive as possible and bring the fitness message to a broader range of Canadians. We are a place where people of all fitness levels, ages, shapes and sizes can feel comfortable visiting, shopping and joining with others to run or walk. We have seen thousands of people totally change their lives when they gain an active lifestyle and improved wellness and we want to help more Frederictonians do the same."

The Fredericton store will place equal emphasis on providing service to runners and walkers. The company offers instructed clinics that bring people with similar goals and abilities together to walk, learn to run, or train for marathon events. The Running Room hosts free group runs and walks every Wednesday night and Sunday morning, open to anyone interested in walking or running. The company carries all major brands of running and walking products, including it's own apparel line. Running Room Fit-Wear® and Walk Fit-Wear® are 100% designed, manufactured and tested in Canada to perform under the extreme weather conditions faced by Canadians walking or running outdoors year-round.

Once an overweight, out-of-shape smoker, Stanton changed his life forever when he entered a 3-kilometer road race with his sons in 1982 and realized he needed to change his lifestyle. He began running secretly before dawn, as he felt awkward about only being able to run the distance between two lampposts without stopping. Stanton went on to run over 55 marathons, hundreds of road races, and numerous triathlons, including the Canadian Ironman and the Hawaiian World Championship Ironman competition.

Today Stanton is a best-selling author of two books on running. More than 400,000 North Americans have graduated from Running Room walking and running clinics. Many have changed their lives through fitness. His run-walk programs have become the standard in Canada with runners from coast to coast using his highly successful 10:1 run-walk combinations to do everything from learn to run to complete marathons, upright and smiling.

John Stanton founded the Running Room in 1984 in an old house in Edmonton, shared with a hairdressing shop. With more than 70 stores in Canada and the United States, the Canadian company is now North America's largest chain of specialty stores for walkers and runners. The Fredericton store is number 75
