Russell Indexes: Eurozone Stocks Surge in the Third Quarter Relative to Global & U.S.

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - Sep 7, 2012) - Russell Indexes analyzed the 2012 year-to-date and quarterly global equity market performance through September 5th. Returns for the Russell Global Index, Russell 3000® Index and the Russell Eurozone Index show that U.S. markets outperformed global and Eurozone markets for the year-to-date, but in the third quarter-to-date Eurozone equities outperformed their U.S. and global counterparts.

"The Eurozone has been experiencing conflicting crosscurrents lately," said Tom Goodwin, senior research director with Russell Indexes. "On the one hand the economic outlook appears to be grim, with business confidence down and the Eurozone on the edge of recession. On the other hand, there are signs that the ECB will 'do whatever it takes' to solve the crisis, just today advancing a new bond buying program. Index returns help demonstrate that investors have taken heart and buoyed up the market, for now."

  • For the third quarter as of September 5th, the Russell Eurozone Index returned +6.2%, relative to a +3.5% return for the Russell 3000® Index and a +3.3% for the Russell Global Index.

  • For 2012 year-to-date as of September 5th, the Russell 3000® Index returned +13.1%, relative to a +9.5% return for the Russell Global Index and a +7.5% return for the Russell Eurozone Index.
