WHAT: On Monday, September 8, 2014, the R.W. Sorrell Scholarship Fund, a local fund started by former Urban League of Philadelphia President Robert W. Sorrell, will host its annual Golf Classic fundraiser, at Glen Mills Golf Course, in Glen Mills, PA, in collaboration with The Ralph A. Sturdivant, Sr. Foundation (RASS), a philanthropic, community-centered non-profit organization. Alvin Williams, retired point guard for the Los Angeles Clippers, and approximately 90 business professionals and community leaders are expected to attend and participate in the day-long tournament.

Since 2012, the golf classic has served as the leading fundraising effort for the R.W. Sorrell Scholarship Fund, which, annually, awards two community service-focused, Philadelphia-area, high school seniors with academic scholarships toward higher education. This year's recipients were Janee Roberts and Raeven Maddox, who will begin their freshman years at Pennsylvania State University, and Lincoln University, in Lincoln University, PA, respectively, this fall. Both students received an $8,000 scholarship, which is to be granted, in $2,000 increments, over a four-year period, and a paid summer internship with Independence Blue Cross. Additionally, thanks to the generosity of its donors, this year, the fund awarded the first-ever $1,000 book scholarship to Phoenix Ward, who will attend Temple University, here.

Established in 2006, the R.W. Sorrell Scholarship Fund was created to promote and support higher education and achievement for students of color and disadvantaged youth, who not only excel in the classroom, but also in community leadership activities. Including this year's winners, the R.W. Sorrell Scholarship Fund has committed approximately $34,000 in academic scholarships to five Philadelphia-area students, since making its first award, in 2012.
