R.W. Sorrell Scholarship Fund To Award $10,000 to Community-Active Students, and Honor Regional Leaders: Daniel J. Hilferty, Dr. William Hite

PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwired - June 01, 2015) - WHAT: On Tuesday, June 2, The R.W. Sorrell Scholarship Fund, a local fund founded by former Urban League of Philadelphia President Robert W. Sorrell, will host an awards reception, at Independence Blue Cross' corporate offices, here, for Central High School senior Brandon Mole, who will be awarded an $8,000 scholarship, over a four-year period, toward his college education.

During the event, the Fund will also recognize two regional leaders, Daniel J. Hilferty, president and CEO, Independence Blue Cross, and Dr. William R. Hite, Jr., superintendent, School District of Philadelphia, who will be presented with the Fund's first-ever Leadership Awards. Hon. Blondell Reynolds-Brown, who was recently re-elected in the City's Primary Election for an at-large City Council seat, will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies.

Mr. Mole, who will attend Pennsylvania State University in the fall, was selected as this year's scholarship recipient because of his 3.76 GPA, and extensive community service work. He has volunteered at the Broad Street Run, bringing water to runners, and with a neighborhood football organization, the Roxborough Eagles, where he assisted the coaches, transported equipment, and helped at the refreshment stand. After battling a form of brain cancer during his freshman year of high school, Mr. Mole believes volunteerism, and helping others less fortunate than him, is his duty.

At the reception, Mr. Mole will be joined by four other R.W. Sorrell Scholarship Fund awardees: 2014 recipients -- Raven Maddox, rising sophomore at Lincoln University; and Janee Roberts, rising sophomore at Pennsylvania State University, and by 2013 recipients: Jazmin Jervis, rising junior at Spelman College; and Chase Roberts, rising junior at Hampton University, who will be awarded their second and third $2,000 scholarship installments, respectively.

About the R.W. Sorrell Scholarship Fund

Established in 2006, the R.W. Sorrell Scholarship Fund was created to promote and support higher education and achievement for minority students and disadvantaged youth, who not only excel in the classroom, but also in community leadership activities. Including this year's winners, the R.W. Sorrell Scholarship Fund has committed approximately $40,000 in academic scholarships to five Philadelphia-area students, since making its first award, in 2012. Mr. Sorrell, a career leader in the National Urban League movement, served as president of the Urban League of Philadelphia, from 1978 to 2002.
