Canada's Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (Rx&D) President Russell Williams announced the creation of a scholarship at the Ivey Business School (Ivey) at Western University today, during the association's Annual General Meeting (AGM). This $100,000 scholarship is established in recognition of the outgoing Chair of the Rx&D Board, Mr. Chris Halyk, President of Janssen Inc., and will support a graduate student enrolled in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program at Ivey.

"In a time where we face increasingly intense global competition, partnerships between leading academic centres and industry becomes even more vital to boost Canada's capacity to innovate," said Mr. Williams during the AGM, which brought industry, patient groups and other stakeholders together to explore ways to better collaborate for improved health outcomes for Canadians and a more sustainable health care environment for Canada.

"This partnership is a great opportunity to develop future leaders who can champion innovation to improve the health and well-being of Canadians, and spur economic growth," stated Dr. Anne Snowdon, Professor and Chair of the Ivey International Centre for Health Innovation.

The Chris Halyk (Janssen Inc.) Health Innovation Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student entering Ivey's MBA program and will be based upon academic achievement and demonstrated community leadership. The recipient will have previous education and/or work experience in the health sector, an intention to complete the requirements of the Health Sector Certificate, and an interest in pursuing a career in health care. Rx&D and Janssen Inc. have each contributed $25,000, and Ivey has matched this contribution with an additional $50,000 for a total of $100,000 over 5 years.

"I believe that intensifying the collaboration of industry and academia will push Canada forward as one of the most innovative countries in the world," added Mr. Chris Halyk. "We at Janssen are proud to be a part of this unprecedented support for the next generation of extraordinary leadership in the field of life sciences and health research at this prestigious academic centre. As an alumnus and with my three children having recently graduated from Western I am pleased to be a part of creating this Health Innovation Scholarship in partnership with Ivey and Rx&D."
