TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Feb. 4, 2014) - Despite a venue change and $1800 security fee imposed by Ryerson University, "Are Men Obsolete? Feminism, Free Speech and the Censorship of Men's Issues" featuring prominent female men's advocate Karen Straughan will proceed at 297 Victoria Street. The event is hosted in direct opposition to policies passed without debate by the Ryerson Student Union (RSU).
The YouTube sensation will argue the need for safe spaces to discuss the well-being of men at university campuses.
"This event launches a Ryerson-based Men's Issues Society," said sponsor Adam McPhee.
In 2013 the RSU rejected groups discussing gender other than through officially sanctioned perspectives, then rejected a female-led initiative to explore men's issues.
"Karen will encourage men and women to work together in a variety of areas and challenge us to take an honest look at where modern feminism has failed in its approach to men," said McPhee.
The event is sponsored by the Canadian Association for Equality.
