Safe Communities Canada Announces National Community Safety Award to CN

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 19, 2009) - Safe Communities Canada president Paul Kells today named CN the winner of the 2009 National Sean Kells Award for Community Safety for its long-time promotion of workplace and community safety promotion across North America.

For more than 25 years in Canada and the United States, CN employees have supported community-driven initiatives that increase safety at highway/railway crossings and discourage trespassing on railway property. Every year, CN Police officers and employee volunteers make hundreds of All Aboard for Safety presentations and speak to more than 300,000 children and adults at schools and community events about the importance of rail safety.

Established in 2002 to remember the preventable workplace death of the 19-year-old son of Mr. Kells, the Sean Kells Award for Community Safety recognizes corporations for their commitment and success of national initiatives that focus on safety promotion, injury prevention and have a significant community component. Previous recipients include Insurance Bureau of Canada, TD Bank Financial Group, Johnson & Johnson, The Co-operators and Rogers Cable.

"CN's unwavering commitment to safety through its All Aboard for Safety community education program has helped substantially reduce rail injury rates and fatalities among young people on or near CN rail lines over the past decade. We are proud to recognize CN for this work and for doing it effectively in collaboration with community safety organizations such as Safe Kids Canada, Operation Lifesaver, SMARTRISK, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and dozens of Canadian Safe Communities."

Paul Miller, Chief Safety and Transportation Officer for CN, said: "CN is very honoured that its safety efforts have been recognized by Safe Communities Canada, one of Canada's leading injury prevention charities. Safety is one of our guiding principles and at the core of everything we do, not only on the job, but beyond our rail lines in the communities we serve."
