Safety hazards growing in Toronto schools

McGuinty: Keep Your Education Promises Attention: City Editor, Education Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 8, 2005) - Toronto (CPE) - On the heels of a major report earlier this week showing no improvement in the state of disrepair in the city's public schools, The Campaign for Public Education is demanding that the McGuinty Liberals live up to their promise of rebuilding our public education system by making our schools clean, safe, up-to-date facilities for our children.

Earlier this week, the Toronto Parent Network released its fourth annual survey of the maintenance, safety and health implications of city public schools. The TPN reported that, "This year's report reveals no improvement to the dismal conditions revealed in our last report" and criticized the Liberal government of Dalton McGuinty for failing to take appropriate action to protect children and young people from harm.

"Torontonians expect that our children are being taken care of in their schools and classrooms," said Chris Glover of the Campaign, a group bringing together parents from diverse communities, teachers, academics, and local businesses to support public education in Toronto.

"The Conservatives cut funding to Toronto schools by 35% creating devastating cuts and causing maintenance to be neglected. The Liberals promised to rebuild our schools, many of which, like the one that my children attend, were built for the baby boomers in the 60s. After 40 years, the school is in need of serious renovation, but the TPN report paints a picture of disrepair and physical decay in our schools that should worry parents, and worry the provincial government."

"The Liberals have promised a program to repair the problems that the TPN report documents. But for worried parents and school employees, it's time to we started to see some real results."
