Saint Joseph Hospital Physician Nkem Iroegbu, M.D., Receives Visionary Award From CommunityHealth

Recognized for 14 Years of Volunteer Service

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - June 3, 2009) - Nkemakolam (Nkem) Iroegbu, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P., associate program director, Internal Medicine Residency, and attending physician, Internal Medicine, Saint Joseph Hospital, received the 2009 Visionary Award from CommunityHealth, the largest free clinic in Illinois.

The honor is given to an individual who exemplifies in his/her compassion and service the importance of making quality health care available to those most in need throughout Chicago and its communities. At the health center's annual gala in May, Dr. Arnold L. Widen, M.D., president, CommunityHealth, presented the award to Dr. Iroegbu for his work the last 14 years as a volunteer caregiver and mentor for new physicians serving the uninsured. This award comes on the heels of Dr. Iroegbu receiving the first Volunteer Provider of the Year Award from CommunityHealth in 2007.

Dr. Iroegbu received his medical degree from the University Of Nigeria College Of Medicine, Enugu, Nigeria. He interned at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York City and completed his residency at the Indiana University School of Medicine Medical Center Hospitals, Indianapolis. He holds a master's degree in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

There were close to 300 guests at the gala, which was held at the Harold Washington Library Center, Winter Garden, on May 9.

Now in its 16th year, CommunityHealth provides free health care services for more than 8,000 low-income, uninsured individuals and families living in Chicago and the surrounding metropolitan area.
