Saint Joseph's Oratory Dedicates the Month of August to Saint Brother Andre

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Aug. 2, 2012) -

Editors Note: A photo for this release will be available on the Canadian Press picture wire via Marketwire.

Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal is presently featuring the birthday of its founder, Saint André Bessette, CSC, during the month of August, by means of a number of interesting activities. A giant banner with his picture will adorn the face of the Basilica until the month of September. The dimensions of this photo replica are 16 feet high and 13 feet wide (5 meters by 4 meters). It is the same photo which adorned St. Peter's Square in Rome during the canonization of Brother André on October 17, 2010.

Among the highlights of this month is surely August 9, the date of his birth. For the occasion, admission to the Oratory Museum is free all day. The major reliquary of Saint Brother André will be put on view in the crypt church from 1 PM to 4 PM. The day's festivities will culminate in a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Bishop Thomas Dowd, auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Montreal. On this occasion, we will bid a prayerful bon voyage to the reliquary since it is going on pilgrimage to a number of parishes in the United States. During the rite, a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Father Charles Corso, CSC, a native of Chicago, Illinois, will formally accept the reliquary in the name of his fellow American citizens. A candlelight procession to the original chapel will end the day's celebration.

Given that acceptance, compassion and service were always at the heart of Brother André's ministry, Home Caregivers will be honored on August 11 and 12. A caregiver will offer a reflection on their experiences at each Sunday Mass. At various places in the Oratory, pilgrims and visitors will be invited to sign a petition asking that Saint Brother André be named Patron Saint of Home Caregivers, at the request of the Regroupement des Aidants Naturels du comté l'Assomption (RANCA).

On Sunday, August 19, at 2 PM, the Oratory will offer you the prospect for a special moment of reflection: the actress Rita Lafontaine will host a presentation called Prières et musique (Prayers and Music). Interspersed with inspiring music and songs, Madam Lafontaine will recite prayers in French taken from the book Prier avec frère André (Pray with Brother André) written by Mr. Sylvain Lupien (Fides, 2010).

The month will end on a beautiful note on Sunday, August 26, when the traditional pilgrimage to Mont-Saint-Grégoire, the birthplace of Brother André (Alfred Bessette 1845-1937), will take place.

This happy month is an advantageous occasion to learn about the life and work of this great Québec native, Saint Brother André, and for the Oratory to offer a moment of reflection to pilgrims and visitors within the very mountain shrine which sits atop Mount Royal.

L'Oratoire magazine also joins the festivities!

L'Oratoire magazine also takes part in the festivities, because this year it celebrates its 100 years of existence. The exhibit "L'Oratoire Magazine… One Hundred Years of History" is open in the Oratory Museum until October 8, 2012. Intimately involved in the life of the shrine from which it emerged, this publication is a privileged witness to the events which took place there. The exhibit offers a retrospective of a century of self-reflection, witness, and creativity. Documents, images, and objects will allow visitors to discover - or rediscover - a publication which developed a unique panorama of Montreal and of the province of Québec from the beginning of the 20th century until today.
