Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center Opens New Wound Healing Center

Offers Latest Technology, Therapies to Treat Chronic Wounds

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - January 31, 2011) - Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (SMEMC) has opened a Wound Healing Center to treat patients with chronic, non-healing wounds. The new center is located at the Saint Elizabeth Campus, 1431 N. Claremont Ave.

The Wound Healing Center offers highly specialized technology and a team of experts trained in caring for wounds that do not heal in more than 30 days. The center is the only dedicated wound-healing facility in Chicago's West Town community.

Tim Heilizer, M.D., board-certified in surgery and colon and rectal surgery, will serve as medical director. Treating patients will be a team of specialists, nurses and technicians.

About 6.5 million Americans suffer from chronic wounds that won't heal because of the patient's age, circulatory problems, diet, diabetes, arthritis, kidney disease and smoking.

"Patients shouldn't have to live with wounds that do not heal," Dr. Heilizer said. "We care for wounds that have not responded to traditional treatment. Our staff will identify the cause of the wound and initiate a treatment plan to help patients regain their health."

Staff is trained to manage wounds including diabetic foot ulcers, lower-leg ulcers, bed sores, bone infection, gangrene, skin tears or lacerations, effects of radiation therapy, surgical wounds, failed skin grafts, burns and any sores failing to improve from treatment.

Individuals should see a doctor for a sore that hasn't healed in 30 days or more; if there is increasing pain, redness, swelling or odor; or if the wound becomes infected.

Leading-edge treatments at the center include:

  • hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which surrounds the patient with 100 percent oxygen at an increased atmospheric pressure -- allowing the body to kill germs and promote healing
  • special wound dressings
  • wound debridement (surgical procedure to enhance the growth of healthy tissues)
  • wound VAC (vacuum-assisted closure) therapy, which delivers negative pressure (a vacuum) to help draw the wound edges together and remove infectious materials

Patients may have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials featuring the latest treatments.

A physician referral is not needed to make an appointment at the center. For information or to make an appointment, call (312) 491-7290 or visit
