Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center Ranks in Top 5 Percent of U.S. Hospitals Based on New Study

One of Only Three Hospitals in Chicago to Earn Distinction 2010 and 2011

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - January 27, 2011) - For two consecutive years, Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (SMEMC) ranks among the top 5 percent of U.S. hospitals for clinical performance -- earning the 2011 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ Award.

The results were published in a new HealthGrades Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study, which identified hospitals with the best overall clinical performance across 26 medical diagnoses and procedures -- from hip fracture repair to stroke care to coronary bypass surgery.

SMEMC is only one of five hospitals in Chicago, 21 in Illinois and 268 nationwide to receive this award. SMEMC is among an elite group of hospitals earning this distinction in both 2010 and 2011 -- one of three in Chicago, twelve in Illinois and 187 nationwide.

HealthGrades, an independent health-care rating company, conducted the study to help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance.

"Receiving this award two years in a row is an extraordinary achievement -- showing that our team of doctors, nurses and staff are focused on the highest standards of patient care," said Margaret McDermott, executive vice president/chief executive officer, SMEMC. "Our patients can count on us for excellent care -- right here in their own community."

The study found inpatients are 29.82 percent less likely to die and 1.91 percent less likely to suffer from complications at a "distinguished hospital" compared to the other 95 percent of the facilities. Data is risk-adjusted so that hospitals treating higher volumes of sicker patients could be compared equally with other hospitals.

HealthGrades analyzed about 40 million Medicare discharges from 5,000 nonfederal hospitals from 2007 to 2009. The study found that if all hospitals performed at the level (top 5 percent), 158,684 Medicare lives could potentially have been saved and 3,511 Medicare in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided.

Part of Resurrection Health Care, SMEMC is an award-winning medical center on Chicago's near northwest side and includes two campuses: Saint Mary Campus, 2233 W. Division St., and Saint Elizabeth Campus, 1431 North Claremont Ave. The hospital specializes in primary care, obstetrics, cardiac care, behavioral health and emergency services. Visit
