NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Nov 10, 2015) - Dr. Salar Ahmed Khan has been a Research Compliance Officer with the Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center (JBVAMC) in Chicago, Illinois since 2009, although he has been with the organization since October 2000, in the Research and Development Department.

Dr. Khan's educational background is in the healthcare field. He earned his first degree from Jinnah Government College, Pakistan, in the area of pre-med with a focus in chemistry, biology and physics. Attending Century University Graduate School of Business in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he received a Master's Degree in Business Administration - Healthcare Management in 1998. Additionally, he has earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Dow Medical College & Civil Hospital, University of Karachi, Pakistan in year 1980, a Diploma in Tuberculosis (T.B.) and Chest Disease from Ojah Institute of Chest Diseases, University of Karachi, Pakistan in 1983, and MCPS in the areas of Chest Disease and T.B. from College of Physicians & Surgeons, Karachi, Pakistan in 1985. Fellowship was awarded by American College of Chest Diseases (FCCP) in 1992 meeting fellowship criteria in the field of pulmonary diseases. Another Fellowship was awarded by American College of Angiology (FACA) in 1993 meeting fellowship criteria in the field of vascular diseases. He has also completed several post-graduate certificate courses in Internal Medicine, Dermatology and Cardiology.

One of the most rewarding professions and an emotionally satisfying way to give back to our nation, Dr. Salar Ahmed Khan explains, is by serving and showing honor to the men and women veterans who sacrificed their lives and by assisting those who have returned disabled.

In his current position as Research Compliance Officer, he is responsible for the provision of research oversight and interpretation of the federal regulations related to human subjects, research on safety, research on laboratory security, research on animals, research information security and research misconduct requirements. Dr. Khan's responsibilities also include review of research regulatory documents, preparing audits accompanied with remedial action plans, internal audits and reporting of serious continuing non-compliance findings to the Medical Center Director, the Research and Development Committee, the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Office of Research Oversight (ORO) in Washington, D.C. He also reviews on a regular basis, affiliate IRB activities with the purpose of identifying areas for corrective actions to ensure VA regulation compliance. With over 1 million pages of regulatory documents at IRB, Dr. Khan has created 16 new Standard of Operating Procedures (SOPs) and revised 8 (SOPs). Continually communicating with the research community through memos and new guidelines, he has prepared ten VA hospital external audits and five research program accreditations with exemplary results.

To his credit, Dr. Salar Khan has trained and educated 749 research investigators and their research teams, IRB and R&D committee members, through town hall meeting presentations and one to one training. The result is a 99% compliance rate in 2014-15, showing a dramatic reduction of non-compliance with federal regulations.

Originally planning on pursuing a career in engineering after high school, Salar Khan had no intention of going to school for medicine. Wanting to honor his father's wishes, however, he decided to pursue entrance into medical school with the encouragement of his father. He got admitted in the Dow Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan, one of the best medical schools in South East Asia at that time. Whatever professional achievements he has today, it was only due to his parents and he salutes them for that.

Dr. Salar Khan completed his residencies in medicine, neurology, general surgery and genito-urinary surgery. In 1980-81, Salar was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Professor Adeib-ul Hassan Rizvi, who worked in the urology unit at Civil Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan when Salar was completing his one-year paid residency under him. It was he that helped Salar gain the confidence he needed to not only treat patients but to also be able to work well independently.

After his residency he began working in Family Practice Medicine for one year in Karachi, Pakistan. Continuing his education, he went on to complete several postgraduate certificate courses before accepting a position at Karachi Psychiatric Hospital in Nazimabad as an attending physician in internal medicine, evaluating the medical needs of patients at the hospital. From 1985 to 1987, at the Karachi Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Khan treated over 27,000 patients in Pakistan between1982-1987.

From 1988 to 1993, Dr. Salar Khan worked as an attending physician in Internal Medicine and Pulmonologist and soon promoted to Chief of Medicine, Chief of Staff, and Hospital Director at Al-Midhnab General Hospital in Saudi Arabia, under Ministry of Health, treating over 65,650 patients. He became one of the best attending physicians in the Al-Qassim Province. With a desire to educate and serve, he accepted a position as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Baqai Medical College and Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan from 1993 to 1994.

In the summer of 1996, Dr. Salar Khan made a life altering change and accepted a position in the United States as a surgical assistant at the Edgewater Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. Within a short period of time, he was promoted to Acting Supervisor of Processing / Material Management where he remained until deciding to do a short stint with the University of Illinois and the Michael Reese Hospital. Ultimately, Dr. Salar Khan accepted a position at the Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The VA Medical Center has two academic affiliates, the University of Illinois in Chicago and Northwestern University, also in Chicago. As Research Compliance Officer, Dr. Khan is directly involved with these institutions, helping them to meet federal regulations on their research activities.

An illustrious career is not without recognition and accolades. Throughout his career, Dr. Salar Ahmed Khan has received many. He received a $25,000 cash award at JBVAMC in the form of special contribution and performance awards. He was nominated for the Spirit of Jesse Brown Award three years in a row 2013-15, Service to America Medal - National Award three years in a row from 2007-2009. He was selected as the Chicago Federal Employee of the Year 2006 finalist for the Program Specialist category, and nominated for the category of Outstanding Team Award in Chicago metropolitan area for Federal Employee of the Year in 2012 and 2013. In 1997 he was awarded the Best Edge Water Medical Center Employee. Dr. Salar Khan worked in Saudi Arabia under Ministry of Health Al-Qassim Region; he was awarded Best Hospital Administrator award in 1993, Award received in 1992 Enhancing Hospital Reputation by High Standard, Best Patient Care Award in 1990 and Best Hospital Employee in 1989. In addition to his awards, Dr. Khan is also a lifetime member with the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent in North America (APPNA) and National Association of Distinguish Professional (NADP) USA.
