Sam Houston State Celebrates 100 Years of Ag Education With Grand Ole Opry, Humor, Banquet and Ranch Tours

HUNTSVILLE, TX--(Marketwire - September 10, 2009) - An evening of Grand Ole Opry and Other Patriotic music will be among the highlights of Sam Houston State University's celebration of 100 years of agricultural education Sept. 25 and 26.

The centennial event kicks off Friday the 25th with a "rollicking celebration of old-time country music," a cocktail reception, a celebration dinner and keynote/comedy presented by highly acclaimed humorist Doc Blakely.

Events begin at 6 p.m. in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on campus.

"We invite everyone involved in agriculture and ag education, alumni of Sam Houston State University, but also anyone who loves the Grand Ole Opry, patriotic music, and good old-fashion humor," said Stanley Kelley, chair of the department and a key organizer of the event.

"Ag education has come a long way over the last 100 years, as has Sam Houston State University," Kelley said. "It's something to celebrate."

Keynoter Doc Blakely is an internationally known humorist; he's also a Sam Houston State alumnus.

Activities continue on Saturday at SHSU's expansive Gibbs Ranch Education and Research Facility with a Cowboy Breakfast at 8:30 a.m., hosted by SHSU president Jim Gaertner and First Lady Nancy Gaertner.

After ranch tours and a social, the Texas cowboy musicians "The Gillette Brothers" perform, followed by a Chuck Wagon Lunch and remarks by State Rep. Lois Kolkhorst and Texas Comissioner of Agriculture Todd Staples.

Reservations for Saturday's activities are $35 per person.
