San Diego Ad Club Issues Position Paper on Destination Marketing for San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 20, 2013) - The Board of Directors of the San Diego Ad Club has issued a position paper in support of destination marketing for San Diego's second largest industry -- tourism. The political turbulence of the past few months in San Diego has prompted much discussion on the value of tourism marketing.

"As the authority on advertising in our city since 1911, the San Diego Ad Club Board of Directors wanted to go on record in favor of destination marketing for San Diego," said Sheila Fox, Executive Director of the San Diego Ad Club. "Advertising is the engine that drives the global economy, builds brands and influences purchase decisions. Tourism is San Diego's second largest traded industry, which means visitors to our city spend money, create jobs and drive much of the revenue we depend upon as a community. To reduce or eliminate destination marketing funds will result in significant loss of revenues generated by a healthy hospitality and tourism industry."

The San Diego Ad Club's position paper references a well-documented case study for the State of Colorado where tourism marketing funding was eliminated in 1993. Not only did tourism revenues drop dramatically, market share plunged 30% within two years. When funds were reinstated in 2000, it took til 2007 for Colorado tourism to be reinstated to its former levels.

Further, the position paper cites a drop in San Diego tourism marketing funding for FY 2013/14 from $30 million to $5 million, compares the San Diego funding levels with spending from other destination markets, and describes how typical measurements of tourism demand, such as hotel occupancy and average daily rate performance for hotel rooms, are projected to show slower growth than our neighboring markets as tourism begins a rebound in 2013.
