San Diego Dentist Now Offering Groundbreaking Orthodontic Treatment

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - July 31, 2015) - Dr. Charles Hulsey III, a San Diego orthodontist, has implemented a new procedure that treats serious bite issues and collapsed facial features in adults without the use of braces, surgery or invasive techniques.

The new concept is called epigenetic orthodontics, which uses bone stem cells to stimulate growth in the patient’s bone structure. This can happen when a part of the alveolar process, the ridge of bone that contains tooth sockets, needs to be normalized.

"If the upper jaw is narrow or deviated, it was thought that surgery was the only way it could be corrected," Dr. Hulsey said. "It has been discovered that light constant forces will induce changes in the entire palate. The patient then has a normal palate without oral surgery, and tongue function adapts."

Dr. Hulsey said this new concept is particularly groundbreaking for patients who suffer from sleep apnea, which is a disorder that restricts breathing often as a result of a narrow palate.

"Patients with breathing problems and sleep apnea can be helped because changing the oral anatomy helps breathing. This makes oral sleep apnea appliances smaller, easier to wear and more effective," Dr. Hulsey said.

Dr. Hulsey said the results of changes in bite have been dramatic. He cited a case involving a 50-year-old patient who is allergic to most braces and had a severe tongue dysfunction and lisp because of her serious bite problem. After being treated with epigenetic orthodontics, the patient’s lisp and tongue problems went away.

Dr. Hulsey said that is just one example of a patient who benefited from this new treatment.

"The epigenetic orthodontic concept expands the ability of the orthodontist to treat sleep apnea patients without surgery and do more orthodontic treatment without dental extraction," Dr. Hulsey said.

Dr. Hulsey’s practice in an up-to-date, 2,000-square-foot facility with five treatment chairs. Many of Dr. Hulsey’s orthodontic assistants and staff have been with his practice for more than 15 years.

Dr. Hulsey has more than 35 years of experience delivering the highest quality orthodontics to his San Diego orthodontic patients. Dr. Hulsey earned his dental degree from the University of Southern California and then received his specialist degree in orthodontics from Washington University. He is a member of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists and the Alpha Tau Epsilon and Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honorary fraternities.

In addition to having completed thousands of hours in continuing education, Dr. Hulsey is a diplomate to the American Board of Orthodontics and founder of the Holistic Dental Association. He founded the Holistic Dental Association in 1978 to continue his study into the relationship between jaw position and patients’ bite. Dr. Hulsey uses orthodontic treatment to relieve patients’ chronic jaw pain and TMJ symptoms. He has found that about 20 percent of all of his orthodontic patients have TMJ issues that can be treated through finding a more appropriate position for the jaw.

Dr. Hulsey uses traditional and short-term orthodontics to correct crooked teeth and bite issues. Traditional orthodontic solutions include Damon braces and lingual braces (braces that are placed on the backside of the teeth). Dr. Hulsey also uses Invisalign, a treatment that implements a series of clear aligners to straighten the teeth gradually. The practice offers Acceledent, an application that uses soft pulses to speed up the orthodontic treatment time. By wearing the Acceledent activator for 20 minutes every day, patients can speed up their overall treatment time and help make the treatment more comfortable.
