San Diego Facial Plastic Surgeon Published in JAMA for Gauge Earlobe Defect Study

Dr. John Hilinski Was Recently Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association's Facial Plastic Surgery Section for His Work in Reconstructing Gauged Earlobes

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - Jan 20, 2015) - Dr. John Hilinski, a facial plastic surgeon in San Diego, co-authored a study that was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The article, titled, "Reconstructing the Gauge Earlobe Defect," covers the assessment and reconstruction of the deformity caused by gauge earrings to achieve the most natural-looking results possible. Dr. Hilinski notes in the article that the extent of the defect corresponds to the complexity of the surgical technique required to correct it.

With the increase in popularity of gauge earrings, Dr. Hilinski notes that he has seen more and more patients at his facial plastic surgery practice wishing to correct the consequential defect. As explained in the JAMA article, Dr. Hilinski says there are three classifications of earlobe deformity: small, medium, and large. He has found that the most beneficial surgical technique to correct each relies on the size and extent of the damage, as detailed below:

  • Small: inner edges of defect are surgically closed
  • Medium: existing tissue is repositioned or wedges of tissue are excised
  • Large: existing tissue is repositioned and excess tissue is removed

By utilizing the above methods, Dr. Hilinski found that patients had significant improvement that looked natural. He explains that earlobe reshaping can provide those with gauge earlobe defect an effective repair for a more professional appearance. He recommends anyone unhappy with how gauge piercings have affected their earlobe aesthetic to schedule a consultation with a board certified facial plastic surgeon to achieve optimal reconstructive results.
