San Diego Orthodontist Uses State-of-the-Art Treatment to Align Teeth

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - August 31, 2015) - Dr. Charles M. Hulsey, a premier family orthodontist, is using a revolutionary new practice known as epigenetics to influence growth in adults and treat alignment and sleep apnea issues.

Epigenetics is a new method that allows the patients to resolve their dental issues without braces or painful jaw surgery. Dr. Hulsey said he recently treated a 50-year-old woman with a severe malocclusion who could not talk without a lisp. The patient had respiratory problems and was allergic to some materials commonly used in orthodontics. Dr. Hulsey used epigenetics and a Damon oral appliance.

“Over the treatment time, she lost her tongue thrust problem and lisp. As her upper jaw widened, her tongue function problem and breathing normalized,” Dr. Hulsey said. “The patient was relieved to have her issues fixed, especially since she had been told she was not a candidate for many other treatments.”

Dr. Hulsey said he has seen epigenetics work wonders for adults suffering from sleep apnea.

“This is a benefit particularly for sleep apnea adult patients. It also makes orthodontists look at expansion as a way to treat orthodontic problems rather than bicuspid tooth extraction,” Dr. Hulsey said.

Dr. Hulsey has more than 35 years of experience delivering the highest quality orthodontics to his San Diego orthodontic patients. Dr. Hulsey earned his dental degree from the University of Southern California and then received his specialist degree in orthodontics from Washington University. He is a member of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists and the Alpha Tau Epsilon and Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honorary fraternities.

In addition to having completed thousands of hours in continuing education, Dr. Hulsey is a diplomate to the American Board of Orthodontics and founder of the Holistic Dental Association. He founded the Holistic Dental Association in 1978 to continue his study into the relationship between jaw position and patients’ bite. Dr. Hulsey uses orthodontic treatment to relieve patients’ chronic jaw pain, TMJ symptoms and sleep apnea. He has found that about 20 percent of all of his orthodontic patients have TMJ issues that can be treated through finding a more appropriate position for the jaw. He focuses on providing nonextraction orthodontics.

Dr. Hulsey uses traditional and short-term orthodontics to correct crooked teeth and bite issues. Traditional orthodontic solutions include Damon braces and lingual braces (braces that are placed on the backside of the teeth). Dr. Hulsey also uses Invisalign, a treatment that implements a series of clear aligners to straighten the teeth gradually. The practice offers Acceledent, an application that uses soft pulses to speed up the orthodontic treatment time. By wearing the Acceledent activator for 20 minutes every day, patients can speed up their overall treatment time and help make the treatment more comfortable.
