San Diego Regional EDC Supports Governor Schwarzenegger's Push for Higher Algebra Standards in California Schools

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - July 11, 2008) - The San Diego region competes for workforce talent in an increasingly global market. San Diego Regional EDC supports Governor Schwarzenegger's push for higher Algebra standards in California schools because our region cannot afford to compromise educational standards on such a fundamental and critical subject as Algebra.

"Algebra is a critical building block in learning the mathematics and science needed for high technology careers," said Mike Chapin, CEO of Geocon, Inc. and Chairman of EDC's Workforce Education Committee. "In my industry and most other high tech fields, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find qualified scientists and engineers. California will benefit greatly in the long-term by increasing the pool of eighth-grade students proficient in algebra, preparing them for greater success in high school classes and, ultimately, their careers."

In recent years significant gains have been made in California in Algebra I enrollment in eighth grade, surpassing other states in the U.S. But in 2007, California's eighth graders ranked 44th in the nation in mathematics achievement. Internationally, eighth graders in the United States were outperformed in mathematics by counterparts in Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan, as well as Belgium, the Netherlands, Estonia and Hungary. We must prepare our children for a knowledge-based economy in which algebra is the cornerstone.

If California, and San Diego, is to succeed in the new era, we must commit to developing bright and innovative minds for the future economy. That means higher standards. We applaud Governor Schwarzenegger's commitment to this issue and join in urging the State Board of Education to vote on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 to approve the revised mathematics blueprint on their agenda.
