San Francisco Giants Knock Tape Out of the Park With Data Domain

Data Domain Selected by Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants for New Backup and Disaster Recovery Solution

SANTA CLARA, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 16, 2007 -- Data Domain, a leading provider of Enterprise Protection Storage systems for disk backup and network-based disaster recovery, today announced that the San Francisco Giants have implemented Data Domain data protection solutions to create an advanced disk backup and disaster recovery solution. With Data Domain enterprise backup and disaster recovery solutions, the Giants now have fast, reliable backups and restores. Additionally, Data Domain's systems have automated data protection processes saving the Giants both costs and administrative time and enabling exceptional business continuity capabilities.

The Major League baseball team installed its first Data Domain DD430 enterprise protection storage appliance for local disk backup in November of 2006. Recently a second DD430 was implemented at its remote Arizona facility for disaster recovery (DR) purposes, using Data Domain's replication software to securely and efficiently vault backup data over a wide area network. The Giants IT group cites numerous benefits derived from their Data Domain solution, including dramatic improvements in backup and restore times, elimination of tape for backup, the extension of their data retention capabilities and reduced management and administrative effort.

"It's easy for IT vendors to sell PowerPoint concepts, but Data Domain has delivered on all promises made," said Dave Woolley, network engineer for the San Francisco Giants. "We did our homework, initially looking at 10 vendors' solutions -- including several virtual tape library options. We found Data Domain to be less costly than enterprise class VTL's that provided replication capabilities. Of the vendors we considered, Data Domain was the only company that actually had its deduplication working, and customers using their products provided us with a high level of confidence. We've had our first Data Domain appliance in place for about twelve weeks and we're already seeing an average compression rate on our backups of 27x, using a variety of data types. Our recoveries are nearly instantaneous now and we even have the capacity for six months of data retention on-site. Data Domain's systems are the foundation of a more secure and reliable disaster recovery solution that has saved us considerable time and money."

The San Francisco Giants IT infrastructure supports both normal business operations for the team's management as well as some user services that are unique to a major league baseball team, such as its video coaching system and homegrown applications for monitoring stats and player rankings. "When Barry Bonds wants to see how he's done against a specific pitcher in the past on an 0-2 count and what pitches the guy is likely to throw, data for our video coaching system needs to be readily accessible," adds Dave Woolley.

Beth White, vice president of marketing for Data Domain, notes, "The San Francisco Giants had some very special applications and data protection requirements to support, as well as a very prominent brand identity to protect. They are a great example of how Data Domain's commitment to delivering simple, flexible solutions makes it easy for customers to implement advanced data protection technologies that yield fast results. Data Domain continues to deliver, with field-proven disk backup and network-efficient disaster recovery solutions that help customers achieve their business continuity objectives."
