San Francisco Maritime Museum Equips Facility With Xirrus High-Performance Wireless Networks to Provide a Connected and Fully Immersive Experience in the Historic Site

San Francisco Attraction Among the First of the National Park Service Sites to Offer Patrons Free Public Wi-Fi

THOUSAND OAKS, CA--(Marketwired - Feb 4, 2014) - Today, Xirrus the leading provider of high-performance wireless networks, announced the deployment of its Wireless Arrays solution at the San Francisco Maritime Museum, which features Pacific Coast maritime history. Museum administrators implemented the Xirrus network to provide wireless connectivity comparable to that of cafes, restaurants, hotels and entertainment venues -- connectivity which people now come to expect. Following completion of the deployment, museum administrators will extend wireless coverage to the outdoor lagoon, Aquatic Park, Muni Pier and the site's historic ships. The Xirrus wireless network has generated new initiatives that are attracting new and returning visitors, including geo-location services for guests, online virtual tours and video footage -- all of which operate wirelessly.

"Access to Wi-Fi is no longer a peripheral consideration in public settings or venues," said Noble Brown, technology specialist at the National Park Service. "People of all ages want to use their mobile devices as a catalyst for richer, more dynamic experiences -- including interactivity with exhibits in museums. The Xirrus network enables us to exceed the expectations of our visitors, and helps bring them back to explore the museum time and time again."

The Maritime Museum deployed XR-520s APs and XR-2420 Wireless Arrays. The XR-520 features an integrated wireless controller, built-in Application Control, wireless IDS/IPS, stateful firewall, spectrum analysis, guest access and iOS device optimization. The Maritime Museum chose the XR-520 APs to prevent single points-of-failure and ensure optimal performance. The XR-2420 Wireless Arrays are the first modular Wi-Fi products that are fully upgradable per radio, and feature an integrated controller for consistent performance.

"Construction is always an obstacle with historical sites," said Jose Perez, director of IT infrastructure services at Xirrus partner MSA Systems. "Extensive cable runs can cause permanent damage and compromise the architecture. Xirrus' multi-radio design and distributed architecture helped us to implement a superlative network while preserving the structural integrity of the building with less equipment, less cabling and fewer switch ports."

"Across the country, national landmarks have been slow to adopt high-performance Wi-Fi," said Bruce Miller, vice president of product marketing at Xirrus. "The National Park Service encompasses more than 400 sites and attracts more than 275 million visitors every year. With the Maritime Museum deployment, Xirrus has paved the way for other landmarks to introduce wireless technology to enhance the consumer experience."
