San Jose CVB'S Host Volunteer Program Celebrates 36 Years

Volunteers Reminisce About Years of Service at the Annual Awards and Recognition Dinner

SAN JOSE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- October 20, 2005 -- The San Jose Convention & Visitors Bureau's (SJCVB) HOST Volunteer Program, which started in 1969, held a "wild west" celebration on September 22, in honor of its volunteers who have committed their time to providing friendly smiles and services to visitors of San José.

The SJCVB's HOST Volunteer Program located at the Mineta San José International Airport's A and C Terminals, has been welcoming incoming and departing guests to the city of San Jose for the last 36 years. The program has nearly 160 active volunteers, many of which have been involved for five years or more.

In addition to assisting at the airport, the HOST Volunteers support the SJCVB's concierge service at the San José McEnery Convention Center and volunteer countless hours to some of the city's major conventions and events, including the San José Jazz Festival, Tapestry and Talent, Tahiti Fete, Christmas in the Park, the San Jose Grand Prix and eBay Live! 2005.

To pay tribute to its volunteers, each year the HOST Program holds an awards and recognition dinner. This year's "Western Showdown" dinner was held at the San José McEnery Convention Center. Decorated in the Wild West theme, the 170 HOST volunteers and guests in attendance were treated to a BBQ dinner and entertained by Cowgirl Cheryl, a U.S. Champion Trick Roper, as well as line dancing lessons. This year's Volunteer of Year, Milt Drotman, was recognized for his commitment and dedication to the HOST Program for the past 13 years.

For many volunteers, the annual awards and recognition dinner is the highlight of the year. Dressed to the nines or in their best western attire, the reception is a time for the volunteers to reflect and take pride in the year's activities.

"My 36 years with the HOST Program has been a kaleidoscope of memories," said Evelyn McCuistion, HOST Volunteer. "As I reminisce and think of all the years I've been with the program, I've witnessed remarkable growth at the airport and have met so many interesting people. The HOST Program is about giving and sharing. It has been an honor to be a part of this outstanding service San José provides."

"Our HOST Volunteers are an essential part of our hospitality industry," said Kathy Romero, HOST Volunteer Manager for the San José Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Oftentimes, our volunteers are the first to welcome or bid farewell to visitors. We are proud of the work they do for us."

Many of the HOST Volunteers are also active community members and participate in other community-based organizations. Mayor Ron Gonzales recognized some these dedicated volunteers at his annual Mayor's Day Celebration on October 8, 2005.
