San Jose Hotel Occupancy Sees Upswing

Year-Over-Year Average Increases Four Consecutive Months

SAN JOSE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- September 1, 2005 -- The San José Convention and Visitors Bureau (SJCVB) announced today the average citywide hotel occupancy in July 2005 was 56.33 percent, an increase of 6.1 percentage points compared to the same month in 2004. July's upswing in year-over-year average is the fourth increase San José's hospitality industry has witnessed in four consecutive months. This follows gains of 8.4 percentage points in June's citywide occupancy, 6.6 percentage points in May and 5.1 percentage points in April.

The upswing is a herald of the area's improving economy and increased efforts by the SJCVB to diversify its meeting and convention bookings. Though San José is still widely known as the "Capital of Silicon Valley," the Bureau has continued to draw business from a wide spectrum of groups, including many outside the high-technology sector such as national associations, sporting events and religious meetings.

Group average occupancy in July 2005 jumped to 28.38 percent, a 5.7 percentage point increase over July 2004. Recent group business helped drive the upswing, as thousands of attendees have come to San José in recent months. Major events such as the inaugural Taylor Woodrow Grand Prix of San Jose and the Annual Tahiti Fete of San Jose both took place in July.

June's group average increase was attributed to high-profile shows including HSMAI's Affordable Meetings West, which came to the city, as did online-auction giant eBay's fifth-annual eBay Live! 2005 user-conference.

"This increase shows that the word is spreading about San José as a meetings destination," said Dan Fenton, president and CEO of the SJCVB. "Our varied hotel options ensure visitors will experience both great service and convenience."

For fiscal year 2004-05, which ended June 30, 2005, the average occupancy at San José hotels ended at nearly 48.9 percent, which matched the yearly figure for FY2003-04, but the average group occupancy rate saw a 3.7 percentage point increase over the previous year.
