San Mateo Harbor Commission Grants Permit to the Half Moon Bay Surf Group; Paves Way for First Annual "The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Invitational"

Commissioners' Unanimous Vote Puts Control of Event Back in Hands of the Surfers and Community Organizers

HALF MOON BAY, CA--(Marketwire - October 22, 2010) -  The Half Moon Bay Surf Group Inc., which consists of a group of Maverick's competitors, community members, long-time event coordinators and sponsors, today announced that it will begin official planning and logistics for the inaugural "The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Invitational" following the San Mateo Harbor Commission's official vote this week to award them the permit for the annual surf competition that takes place at Maverick's in Half Moon Bay. The decision officially takes control of the event from the previous event management company, Mavericks Surf Ventures. The first annual "The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Invitational" will honor Jay Moriarity, one of the sport's greatest watermen, with the official contest window opening on Dec. 1.

"The Commission's decision lays the foundation for turning 'The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Invitational' into reality," said Grant Washburn, a well-known surfer and one of the founders of the Half Moon Bay Surf Group. "We are committed to channeling the excitement and momentum brought on by their decision into the work that is now ahead of us."

The Half Moon Bay Surf Group takes its responsibility to the competitors, fans, and the local community very seriously and plans to organize and run this inaugural event in a way that is true to the sport. Barracuda Networks, a former sponsor of past Maverick's events, recognized the mission behind "The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Invitational" and has committed to sponsoring the event for the next three seasons. Barracuda Networks is the only sponsor to date.

"Clearly we are pleased with the Commission's decision and we reaffirm our commitment to making sure that this event has the stability and support that it needs to not only be successful, but ultimately to make it one of the surf world's hallmark events," said Michael Perone, CMO and executive vice president of Barracuda Networks and The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Invitational premier sponsor.

About Jay Moriarity
Jay Moriarity became famous through his mastering of the feared K2 of surfing's big wave breaks, Maverick's in Half Moon Bay, as a teenager. He passed away unexpectedly at the age of 22 in a diving accident while visiting the Maldives Islands in 2001. Before his passing, Jay was considered one of Big Wave surfing's most dominant talents. His generous character and pure stoke gained him respect in and out of the water.

"Jay is someone that many of us personally knew and loved and Maverick's is a site that we know was very dear to his heart as well," said Katherine Kelly, Half Moon Bay Surf Group committee member. "I am proud of the direction that the event is taking and excited for what this event will become."

Next Steps
Half Moon Bay Surf Group event organizing committee will now turn its focus on ironing out the logistical details for the event, beginning with the opening ceremony on Nov. 29 in which Maverick's competitors will draw heats. The 2010/2011 contest waiting period will open Dec. 1, 2010 and end on Feb. 28, 2011, a period of time when Mother Nature is most likely to deliver the next 40-50 foot waves to Half Moon Bay.

"We're super-stoked," said Kenny "Skindog" Collins, surfer and Maverick's competitor. "We said we needed to have change, a revolution, and run the contest for the surfers, by the surfers."
