SAND/DNA in Action

In the United Kingdom, revenue allocation and settlement among train companies is a key issue for the rail industry. Approximately 300 million train tickets are sold each year, in stations, on trains, via more than 10,000 ticket machines, and over the worldwide web. Each ticket sale transaction has to be polled, validated and apportioned to the appropriate train operating company. The organization responsible for managing this data is the Rail Settlement Plan (RSP).

RSP selected Atos Origin to design, build and operate the UK rail settlement system, which allocates more than US$ 6.9 billion in annual passenger revenue to the UK's passenger train operators. Code-named LENNON (Latest Earnings Networked Nationally Over Night) the system developed by Atos Origin processes information from all UK train ticket sales, then allocates daily revenues to each of the 26 train operating companies within 24 hours of ticket purchase. LENNON is an extremely complex system, involving 15 million lines of code, 15 terabytes of disk space, 80 gigabytes of memory and 20 Sun Solaris 1200-MHz processors.

Atos Origin recognized that it needed to find a software solution that could control warehouse growth, optimize service levels to users, and control the overall costs of data management.
