Sandvine Teams With Citrix for Mobile Packet Core Offload

Sandvine Leverages Citrix NetScaler to Intelligently Manage Data Traffic for Mobile Carriers

ORLANDO, FLORIDA--(Marketwire - March 22, 2011) - CTIA -

Attention Technology Editors:

Sandvine, (TSX:SVC)(AIM:SAND) a leading provider of intelligent broadband network solutions for fixed and mobile operators, today announced that it is collaborating with virtual computing and networking leader Citrix Systems to offer mobile packet core offload solutions for mobile carriers.

New sophisticated devices on mobile and LTE networks, and the growth of real-time entertainment (up to 42 percent of peak Internet traffic), are creating demand for solutions that can simultaneously reduce packet core congestion and improve the user experience. Sandvine is addressing this opportunity by combining the network policy control capabilities of the Sandvine Policy Traffic Switch (PTS) with Citrix® NetScaler®, the networking solution that accelerates and secures traffic for 75 percent of all internet users every day. The solution enables carrier-grade Selected IP Traffic Offload (SIPTO) deployments, as described by the evolving 3GPP Release 10 standards, effectively offloading traffic from the packet core infrastructure while preserving content delivery and charging models.

Initially, the joint solution supports two compelling use cases. First, it helps mobile carriers reduce both packet core congestion and transit costs, using intelligent traffic redirection based on subscriber, device, and application type. In this scenario, the PTS redirects select mobile 3G or 4G data traffic to NetScaler, which routes the traffic via a direct path to the Internet, while the control plane remains unaffected. Requested content is delivered to the subscriber using the same expedited path, resulting in improved content delivery and quality of experience. The PTS also fulfills the functionality of the charging gateway, supporting the established prepaid or postpaid billing models.

In the second use-case, multi-national mobile providers can improve service for data roaming subscribers on affiliated networks. This solution reduces network transit costs while dramatically reducing traffic latency for an improved user experience. The Sandvine Policy Traffic (PTS) seamlessly integrates with both offline and online charging via standard based interfaces to enable the creation of innovative roaming plans while insuring accuracy and transparency of billing information.

"Sandvine is excited to work with Citrix and leverage our core competencies to address the critical needs of mobile carriers worldwide. Mobile packet core offload solutions provide increased user experience in today's 3G networks, and are equally relevant for LTE networks," said Don Bowman, Sandvine CTO.

"Citrix technologies are used worldwide to give users self-service access to business applications and content anytime on any of the leading mobile devices," said Sunil Potti, vice president of product marketing and management at Citrix. "The combined Sandvine PTS and Citrix NetScaler solution further extends the virtual computing experience by helping mobile operators cut their packet-core costs while improving the end-user's quality of experience."
