SAP Developer Challenge Celebrates the Spirit of Co-Innovation

Top Developers From Across North America Gather at SAP in Silicon Valley to Create Innovative Enterprise-Software Prototypes for Competition

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwire - June 10, 2008) - SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced the results of the 2008 SAP Developer Challenge, an annual competition hosted by SAP in Silicon Valley that celebrates collaboration and co-innovation within the SAP developer, customer and partner communities. Forty-five developers from SAP and customer and partner companies gathered at SAP Labs in Palo Alto for five days to work together and compete to innovate around current industry trends. Drawing from real-world challenges faced by customers across industries and across the globe today, the topics for this year's challenge were "Green IT," "Social Computing for the Enterprise" and "Mobilizing the Enterprise."

In a format designed to strengthen networking, inspire co-innovation and encourage collaboration, the participants were grouped into seven teams to compete against each other with a goal of developing innovative new enterprise-software prototypes. Over the course of a weekend, the teams selected their topic and built a prototype, which they then presented to a packed house in Palo Alto at a "Demo Jam" session.

"It was very cool to demonstrate that a small team of developers could rapidly create a useful business application with the well-designed API SAP provides," said Greg Suhok, programmer/technical analyst, Colgate-Palmolive. "It's great when a company like SAP opens its doors to outside developers and offers up its technology as a testing ground. Working with, and completing against, developers of this caliber was a truly challenging and rewarding experience."

"Project Green Drive" Wins Developer Challenge

The six members of the "Binary Jammers" team took the top prize with "Project Green Drive," a corporate carpooling solution based on social-networking principles and featuring a location-sensitive Blackberry interface, a Facebook interface and customizable Xcelsius dashboards, all powered by the SAP NetWeaver® technology platform. Project Green Drive aims to help commuters connect with fellow carpoolers and help companies track metrics related to employees' efforts to use greener commuting options. This winning project will be featured at SAP® TechEd, the company's largest ecosystem education event of the year, being held in Las Vegas, September 8-12, 2008.

"Team Insomina" took second place in the SAP Developer Challenge Demo Jam, with GreenSoap, a set of application program interfaces (APIs) that would enable online retailers to evaluate various environmental impact factors of customer purchases and empower consumers to make greener online-buying choices. The third-place demo, presented by team "IT's Easy" showed an integrated solution that would promote and track consumer recycling of mobile devices.

The remaining three teams demonstrated a solution enabling automated plant operations (such as work-order generation and order status) via a natural-language interface for mobile devices; an intelligent collaboration tool that marries e-mail and instant messaging; and a proximity-based credit-card fraud detection system using a global positioning system (GPS) sensor to match cardholders with point-of-sale locations.

RIM Provides Mobile Application Development Platform

For this year's SAP Developer Challenge, Research In Motion (RIM) provided the mobile application development platform and BlackBerry® devices to the various teams competing in the "Mobilizing the Enterprise" challenge. RIM personnel also attended the event and addressed the group on mobilizing SAP applications through the BlackBerry platform. SAP and RIM recently announced a co-innovation partnership to enable anytime, anywhere mobile access to SAP enterprise applications through the widely adopted BlackBerry platform (see May 2, 2008 press release titled, "SAP and RIM Usher in New Era for Enterprise Mobility").

"We are pleased to support the SAP Developer Challenge to promote innovation in mobile application development on the BlackBerry platform," said Jeff McDowell, vice president, Global Alliances at Research In Motion. "We applaud SAP for spreading the same spirit of innovation and collaboration that we have experienced in our own partnership with SAP."

"The goal of the SAP Developer Challenge is to create an opportunity for our customer and partner ecosystems to get hands-on exposure to our developer talent as well as the latest technology and innovation from SAP," said Rami Branitzky, managing director, SAP Labs North America. "This annual event has developers from across North America gathering in Silicon Valley to tap into the collective knowledge and experience of the industry's top talent. The ideas and prototypes developed here have the ability to influence technology trends across the industry."
