Sapphire Materials Company Begins Sapphire Production in September

WASHOUGAL, WA--(Marketwire - Jul 28, 2011) - Sapphire Materials Company (SMC), a subsidiary of Silicon Chemical Corporation (SCC), announces completion of Phase I development of their new sapphire manufacturing business. SCC acquired the former Saint Gobain / Union Carbide sapphire crystal growing facility located in Washougal, Washington in October 2010 and began process research along with design, renovation and retrofit of the plant to large-scale sapphire production.

Phase II construction is underway with scheduled completion in September 2011. SMC will primarily produce sapphire for the LED market, but will be providing material to a number of other industries as well. SMC's business model will allow for conceivably the lowest cost production in the industry with high reliability and consistent product quality. Initial shipments of sapphire product will begin this November.

SMC will use a variety of equipment and crystal growing technologies from outside suppliers, as well as novel in-house methodologies being developed by SMC. All process utility and infrastructure requirements are in place for installation of crystal growing equipment to meet SMC plans to ramp capacity to over 100,000 KG by the 4th quarter of 2012.
