Sarasota Chiropractor Treats Whiplash Cases Old and New

SARASOTA, FL--(Marketwire - Nov 29, 2011) - Dr. Abe Kozma, a chiropractor in Sarasota, has treated hundreds of cases of whiplash at the Chiropractic and Acupuncture Center of Sarasota over the past 11 years. According to statistics from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), an auto injury occurs every ten seconds in the United States, approximately three million of which result in the characteristic neck injury. The sudden acceleration and deceleration force sustained by the neck can occur at speeds as low as five miles per hour and often result in neck pain, headaches, back pain and other symptoms. Dr. Kozma recommends that anyone who has been in a car accident come in as soon as possible for an evaluation, even if the injury does not seem severe.

Dr. Kozma explains that emergency room doctors have triage protocols to follow when injured people come into the hospital, so when someone with a non-life threatening injury comes in, the time for doctors to give them a full evaluation is limited. If the patient is functioning normally, they may get a neck brace and some painkillers if they are in pain.

"Many whiplash patients go home thinking a little rest and some painkillers will fix their problem, but unless the neck injury is fully evaluated, the soft tissue damage and resulting vertebrae misalignments can cause all kinds of pinched nerves. We have had patients who sustained neck injuries years ago and thought they were better because their necks didn't hurt; but they were having migraines or back pain that didn't seem to have any other cause. After evaluation, an old neck injury was often the root problem," said Dr. Kozma.

When a car accident victim comes into his Sarasota chiropractic clinic, Dr. Kozma x-rays the patient and runs several diagnostic tests to determine the severity of the neck injury and its precise location. Once he has a clear diagnosis about the extent of the whiplash injury, he develops a treatment plan with the patient that includes spinal adjustments to realign vertebrae that have gone out of alignment from the injury. He also has patients undergo treatments of physiotherapy, massage, and corrective exercises to help with the soft tissue injuries to muscles, ligaments and tendons in the neck. He also offers acupuncture for pain relief.

According to several patient testimonials on Dr. Kozma's website, these forms of treatment have helped them recover from pains associated with their neck injuries. One of the patients reported that, "On March 15, 2011, I got rear ended. My neck and back were hurting so much. I was referred to Dr. Kozma by some friends for my neck and back pain. After a couple of treatments, I began feeling better. Between the massage and other chiropractic treatments for my pain, I never felt better before."
