Sari Closet Announces Launch of New Sari Rental Service

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - May 26, 2011) - Sari Closet launched a nationwide online sari rental service to provide high-quality saris for rent to those who want to look the part without paying the full rate. Saris are formal South Asian women's apparel.

Sari Closet is the brainchild of highly-motivated and entrepreneurial-spirited students from UCLA's Anderson School of Management, who wanted to showcase their South Asian culture through fashion. What started out as an idea for a class project has developed into the launch of SariCloset.com, an online walk-in closet filled with hand-picked Indian saris purchased directly from Indian designers which can be borrowed by anyone across the country.

Women of South Asian descent living in the U.S. typically need saris for 3-4 events per year, for weddings, holidays, and formal social gatherings. When a guest has been invited to a traditional South Asian wedding or special event, she has to scramble to find a sari that she has not been seen in before -- a much harder task in today's social media and photo sharing world. Sari Closet takes away the hassle and stress of finding the perfect outfit for these special occasions by offering a diverse and beautiful collection of Indian saris in a wide variety of styles, colors, fabrics, patterns, and embroidery work, as well as free shipping and dry cleaning, all for an introductory price of $79 per sari rental.

Sari Closet is also targeting the growing demand for saris (often spelled "sarees") from women of other ethnicities. "Non-South Asians have always wanted to participate in their friends' weddings and culture, but buying a sari to wear once is expensive and confusing," said Sari Closet co-founder and CEO Nisha Patel. "Now, they can wear a high-quality, trendy Indian sari to their friend's wedding, for a quarter of the price of buying a sari. Plus, they can learn about the latest sari fashion and even how to wear a sari through our blog and social media platforms."

Sari Closet also offers a collection of matching sari blouses, bindis, and Indian jewelry to accessorize any sari.

With the entire collection available online, Sari Closet allows guests to search hundreds of saris that have been cared for and maintained by the sari experts on the team, known as "saristas." Instead of having to borrow from a stranger or making an expensive sari purchase from an unknown seller, renting from Sari Closet ensures that anyone, regardless of ethnicity, will look glamorous in an outfit that has been meticulously picked out by the saristas.

"Indian women are caught in a catch-22 today. It is a major faux pas to be seen in the same sari on two different occasions, yet saris are very expensive and it's hard to justify a sari purchase for every event when the economy is still recovering," said co-founder Sreesha Vaman. "We hope our customers will treat Sari Closet as a friend with a great wardrobe -- one they can borrow from time and time again."
