Sarnia Walk for Muscular Dystrophy

Only 3 days away! Coming Together to Make Muscles Move

SARNIA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - May 22, 2013) - On Saturday, May 25th, Sarnia will be moving its muscles to make an impact in the fight against muscular dystrophy. The community will be coming together to support thousands of children, teens and adults who are affected by neuromuscular disorders in Canada at the inaugural Sarnia Walk for Muscular Dystrophy.

Taking part in the Sarnia event will be the 2013 Walk Ambassador, Lisa Headrick, who understands the importance of this community event. "I participate in this walk annually in support of my husband Ward and everyone that we have met along the way in this journey. I believe that staying strong and believing in a cure will keep us positive," says Lisa, whose husband Ward was diagnosed with FSH muscular dystrophy at the age of 24.

Muscular dystrophy refers to a group of progressive muscle disorders that weaken the muscles that control body movement. These disorders can have devastating effects, resulting in the loss of most abilities we take for granted. Over time, many people with neuromuscular disorders are unable to walk, speak or ultimately breathe. For some, the disorder is fatal.

The Walk for Muscular Dystrophy is "an opportunity for the community to come together and support those affected by neuromuscular disorders at the local level." describes Stacey Lintern, Muscular Dystrophy Canada Ontario Executive Director. This family-friendly, fully inclusive event is sponsored by Lambton Metal Service and will include activities for kids, food and refreshments, a prize raffle and a visit from local Fire Fighters.

Proceeds from the event support various programs including funding equipment, assistive living devices and support services for individuals and families faced with financial hardships, information and advocacy initiatives, and fund research to one day find a cure. Muscular Dystrophy Canada receives almost no government funding and relies on donor dollars.

The fun will be taking place on Saturday, May 25th at Canatara Park in Sarnia. Participant registration begins at 10:00 am and the walk, wheel and roll will begin at 11:00 am.
