Save Nelson House Community Group calls on supporters to attend court hearing

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 14, 2012) - The Save Nelson House Community Group is calling on all supporters to attend a court hearing taking place today, June 14, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at 161 Elgin Street in Ottawa.

On May 25, the Board of Directors of Nelson House temporarily closed this shelter in Ottawa for women and children fleeing domestic violence. Nelson House provides shelter for 15 women and children. Just before it closed it was nearly at capacity. It also provides jobs for 25 full-time, part-time and casual shelter staff.

The all-female staff at Nelson House are represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 3851 and are now faced with the permanent closure of this shelter.

In violation of Nelson House corporate bylaws where proper notice of a meeting has to be given to all members of the corporation, the Board of Directors is holding a meeting tonight, Thursday, June 14, where they plan to recommend permanent closure of the shelter.

But in an effort to stop the meeting, the community group has filed an emergency injunction in order to stop the meeting and force the Board to hold a public meeting in accordance with their bylaws.

The Save Nelson House Community Group is urging supporters to show the courts that this community is ready to stand up for Nelson House and the services the agency provides to women and children of Ottawa.
