Local animal-welfare organizations, such as shelters and rescue groups, are invited to attend at no charge so they can promote and raise funds for their lifesaving efforts. The PetWalk also includes live entertainment, refreshments and fun activities for people and pets alike.

"Proceeds from this worthwhile event will benefit participating animal welfare organizations in North Carolina and South Carolina, as well as nonprofit PetSmart Charities, which is the largest funder of companion-animal welfare efforts in North America," said Susana Della Maddalena, executive director of PetSmart Charities, Inc. "The PetWalk has proven to be a remarkably successful and popular event that unites thousands of pets and the people who love them. We're thrilled to bring the PetWalk to North Carolina this fall."

The first two PetWalks in Tempe, Ariz., have raised more than $550,000 to support efforts that save the lives of homeless pets and, each year, have attracted more than 10,000 human and pet participants. Now one of the largest pet-themed events in the metro-Phoenix area, the PetWalk is expanding to communities across the U.S. to support the efforts of local agencies and shelters that strive to save the lives of pets who don't have homes. The fundraising goal for the upcoming 2010 Charlotte PetWalk is $370,000.

"The PetWalk also raises awareness about the plight of pets who don't have homes and gives everyone who cares about pets the chance to get involved in a lifesaving effort," Della Maddalena added. "It's a great way to celebrate the special pets in our lives and also help so many other pets in need."

Established in 1994, PetSmart Charities, Inc. is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that creates and supports programs that save the lives of homeless pets, raise awareness of companion animal welfare issues, and promote healthy relationships between people and pets. The largest funder of companion-animal welfare efforts in North America, PetSmart Charities has provided $110 million in grants and programs benefiting animal welfare organizations and, through its in-store adoption program, helped save the lives of more than 4 million pets. To learn more about how PetSmart Charities is working toward its Vision of a lifelong, loving home for every pet, visit or call 1-800-423-PETS.
