Save the Dates to Save Homeless Pets in the Carolinas

Pet Adoption Event Rounds Out Two-Day PetSmart Charities® PetWalk™ Event in Charlotte, October 9th and 10th

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwire - July 8, 2010) - Want to save the lives of homeless pets in the Carolinas? Then save the dates -- Saturday October 9, and Sunday, October 10, 2010 -- for the PetSmart Charities PetWalk and Adoption Event, presented by Purina® Pro Plan®.

In addition to the PetWalk on Saturday, October 9, an Adoption Event on Sunday, October 10 will feature several area animal shelters and rescue groups. The wonderful dogs and cats in their care will be ready and waiting to find their lifelong, loving Pet Parents from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Independence Park in lovely Charlotte, N.C. Each adopter will receive free samples of dog or cat food, courtesy of Purina Pro Plan.

"PetSmart Charities and participating animal welfare organizations in North Carolina and South Carolina are teaming up to help save even more lives with the addition of this exciting, new adoption element to the PetWalk," said Susana Della Maddalena, executive director of PetSmart Charities, Inc. "The PetWalk has proven to be a remarkably successful and popular event, and we're thrilled to be able to expand it by adding an opportunity for on-site pet adoptions the following day."

The PetWalk also takes place at Independence Park and features a one-mile walk and a 5K. Registration and activities begin at 9 a.m. and the walks begin at 10:30 a.m. The entry fee is $20 per person in advance or $25 on event day. Children 17 and younger are free.

Local animal-welfare organizations, such as shelters and rescue groups, are invited to attend at no charge so they can promote and raise funds for their lifesaving efforts. The PetWalk also includes live entertainment, refreshments and fun activities for people and pets alike.

The first two PetWalks in Tempe, Ariz., have raised more than $550,000 to support efforts that save the lives of homeless pets and, each year, have attracted more than 10,000 human and pet participants. Now one of the largest pet-themed events in the metro-Phoenix area, the PetWalk is expanding to communities across the U.S. to support the efforts of local agencies and shelters that strive to save the lives of pets who don't have homes. The fundraising goal for the upcoming 2010 Charlotte PetWalk is $370,000. The goal for the Adoption Event on Sunday is 125 adoptions.

"The PetWalk and Adoption Event raises awareness about the plight of pets who don't have homes and gives everyone who cares about pets the chance to get involved in a lifesaving effort," Della Maddalena added. "It's a great way to celebrate the special pets in our lives and also help so many other pets in need."
