Saving Mothers Launches Campaign to Raise Awareness of Staggering Rate of Maternal Death in Developing Nations

Founder and Medical Director Dr. Taraneh Shirazian Cites Deaths of Nearly 350,000 Young Women as "a Human Rights Violation We have the Power to Prevent" and Looks to Public Education as the First Line of Defense

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - March 31, 2015) - Saving Mothers, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating preventable maternal deaths in the developing world, announced the debut of the first in a series of ads designed to raise awareness of the crisis and engender support for the preventive measures the organization has put in place on the ground to directly address the problem.

The announcement was made this morning by Dr. Taraneh Shirazian, a board-certified gynecologist with Mt. Sinai in NYC who also serves as the Director of Global Women's Health there. Dr, Shirazian is the President and Medical Director of Saving Mothers, as well as one of its founders.

"Women in the developing world are up to 43 times more likely to die in childbirth," observed Dr. Shirazian, "and most of these deaths are fully preventable. We have the tools to reverse this trend, but we cannot do it alone."

To this end, Saving Mothers is embarking on a multi-year public-service advertising (PSA) campaign to raise awareness of the extent of global maternal death and to educate the public as to the specific solutions it has developed to help combat it. The campaign was created by The PhB Group in Bedford Hills, NY. 

"We wanted to partner with PhB because of their unique ability to convey our position and communicate it in a very compelling and powerful way," said Lisa Gilligan, MPH and Executive Director of Saving Mothers.

The campaign will include print, outdoor and digital PSAs, distributed to various media outlets nationwide, and will run in space donated by the media. Time, Inc was the first to step up, debuting the full-page ad in its March 23 issue.

"We are anticipating a great deal of exposure in May to coincide with Mother's Day," stated Terrie Paladino, President of the PhB Group, "and when you think about, there truly isn't a better way to honor your mother than by supporting this cause."

A ten dollar donation to the website -- www.savingmothers.org -- covers the cost of a birth kit containing simple items such as surgical gloves, Purell, a shower curtain (for floor protection) a clean razor (to safely cut the umbilical cord) and other items which will spare a young mother from infection and help save her life, and protect her baby too.
