Con Edison Launches Program to Cut Energy Costs for Businesses & Help the Environment

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - February 25, 2010) - Con Edison today launched new programs to help large businesses cut their energy costs, while helping the environment and earning financial incentives. The goal is to reduce peak electric use during New York City's hottest summer days by 200 megawatts (MW), enough to eliminate emissions from several small power plants.

From March 1 to April 1, businesses that can cut their demand for electricity by 50 kW when requested may enroll to receive financial incentives in Con Edison's Commercial System Relief Program (CSRP) and Critical Peak Rebate Program (CPRP). These new and aggressive demand side management programs are open to eligible customers in New York City's five boroughs.

"These peak reduction programs give New York City customers a simple, low-cost way to improve air quality in the city where so many people live and work," said Rebecca Craft, director of Energy Efficiency Programs at Con Edison. "The incentives for the programs can be significant and will also help to reduce customer costs. This is a win-win for business and the environment."

Participation in the programs is voluntary and businesses that enroll will be notified one day in advance of the required reductions. Companies that can reduce 50 kW will receive payments averaging $1,500 to $4,500 each summer depending on weather and enrollment choices, in return for participation. Payments will be higher for greater participation.

Commercial customers who participate in the programs would be expected to temporarily reduce electricity use during the hottest summer days, which will help to reduce the overall peak demand in the company's service area. Con Edison anticipates calling on enrolled businesses to initiate their energy reduction measures three to five times per year. Cutting back on power could mean turning off lights, shutting down certain elevator banks or turning off escalators.

These programs are in addition to many energy efficiency efforts being launched by Con Edison in 2010 to help customers cut energy use and improve air quality.
